The Middle School League and the Major League will face off at 8 p.m. at ComedySportz Improv Theatre, 8906 W. Broad St. in the Gold’s Gym Plaza. Explore the mystery of pre-historic life at Discover the Dinosaurs, a unique hands-on exhibit of over 60 museum quality and animatronic dinosaurs, June 6-8 at Richmond International Raceway, 600 E. Laburnum Ave. Discover the Dinosaurs features walk-through exhibits with scenes that engage visitors with sight, sound, motion, lighting, animatronics and fog, as well as dinosaurs that come to life with sound and movement controlled by guests. Admission also includes entrance to the dino dig, dino den, dino theater, dino coloring station and scavenger hunt. Other attractions require separate tickets. New Genesis – New Beginnings, in conjunction with Amen 820, will host a youth rally and day of prayer and praise from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fairfield Commons Mall, 4869 Nine Mile Rd. Speakers include Dr. Cavell Phillips of Amen 820, Minister Pierre Whitlow, George Bozeman and Oliver Wallmon. A book signing for “See You at the Big One,” a newly released Henrico County Division of Fire historical book, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Costco, 1401 Mall Dr. in Chesterfield. The coffee table-style book contains a detailed history of the department dating back to the origins of Henrico County. The book includes major fires, apparatus, fire stations, chiefs, patches/badges and more complemented by over 750 photographs. Every Sunday the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for family fun time with kids of all ages. The gym will be split in half with different sports each week on one half and a wide variety of games and activities like ping pong, billiards, air hockey and foosball on the other. Participants will be required to sign a liability waiver provided on site. Admission is free. The program continues through Aug. 19. Thanks to a first-place win in The American Protege International Vocal Competition 2014, Glen Allen High School student Matija Tomas will travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in December.
At the first-place winners recital in Weill Hall, Matija will perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera aria, “Chi il bel sogna di doretta.” She will perform with other vocalists from around the world and have the opportunity to win other awards and scholarships.
Locally, Thomas has performed with Richmond’s renowned Glorious Christmas Nights, Christian Youth Theatre, and WEAG’s Urban Gospel Youth Choir. > Read more.
The John Rolfe YMCA and Gayton Baptist Church have partnered in an effort to bring greater health and wellness opportunities to the community.
Through this partnership, the John Rolfe Y will run Youth Winter Sports programs, including basketball and indoor soccer, in Gayton’s newly renovated $5.5 million outreach center that features a new gymnasium, youth and teen space, social space with café, meeting space and full service commercial kitchen. > Read more.
CAT Theatre’s 51st season will open with Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, which will run Oct. 24 through Nov. 8. The play is based on the original 1899 play by William Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and adapted by Steven Dietz, and was the winner of the 2007 Edgar Award for Best Mystery Play.
The story follows Holmes, whose career as the world’s greatest detective seems to have reached its end until he is confronted with a case far too tempting to ignore. When the King of Bohemia faces blackmail by famed opera singer, Irene Adler, Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson find themselves falling into the trap of evil genius Professor Moriarty. > Read more.
