West End Comedy will host an all-ages show at 7:30 p.m. June 22 and a mature show at 7:30 p.m. June 23 at HATTheatre, 1124 Westbriar Dr. An improv jam with audience participation will follow the June 23 show from 9:15 p.m. to 10 p.m. Admission is $5. For details, visit http://www.wecomedy.com .
The 10th annual Richmond Vegetarian Festival will take place from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Bryan Park, 4300 Hermitage Rd. The outdoor event will showcase over 100 vendors and restaurants, as well as live music, speakers and food demonstrations. Donations to Lamb’s Basket are encouraged. Well-behaved, leashed and vaccinated dogs are welcome. All vegetarians, as well as those just interested in getting healthy are invited. Rain date is June 30. Admission is free. The Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center, a nonprofit speech and hearing clinic for children, will hold its annual spaghetti dinner from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Temple, 4204 Hermitage Rd. Meal includes spaghetti, fresh salad, bakery bread, homemade desert and choice of beverage. Live music will be provided by country/gospel group Baker Family. Tickets are $7. Youth ages 7-12 are invited to explore Walkerton Tavern, 2892 Mountain Rd., from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Guests will look through a floor, move a wall, post the mail, vote in an election and learn a 19th-century game. The Jammin’ on the James Concert Series opens for its fifth year from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Wilton House Museum, 215 S. Wilton Rd. Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy family-friendly music from Emme St. James and her Jazz Gentlemen. There will also be tours of Wilton and face painting, games and crafts for the kids. CultureWorks will present Cultsha Xpo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 W. Broad St. The annual event highlights the Richmond region’s nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. There will be free performances including musical, visual art, theatrical, historical, dance and more. Families will have the opportunity to learn more about classes, tickets, subscriptions and education programs. Xpo attendees who are registered Cultural Shareholders will be given Cultsha Bucks, fake money that is used as real money at the Xpo to purchase tickets, enroll as members, sign up for classes and make donations. The third annual Jack & Abby 5K and Kids 1 Mile Race will start at 8:15 a.m. at 4222 Cox Rd. in Innsbrook. Proceeds support babies in the Bon Secours Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU). Oak Hall Baptist Church, 1877 Old Hanover Rd. in Sandston, will host Vacation Bible School from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 23. The 10th Annual Filipino Festival will be held Aug. 7-8 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 8200 Woodman Rd., beginning with opening ceremonies at 5 p.m. Friday and continuing with live entertainment, food and exhibits until 10 p.m. On Saturday the festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a full schedule of performances featuring traditional Filipino dance, music and song.
Filipino cuisine, including BBQ, pansit, lumpia, adobo, halo-halo, lechon, empanada and leche flan, will be available for purchase. The festival will also feature a children's area, church tours, exhibits, and health screenings. > Read more.
The Children’s Museum of Richmond last week opened its new Short Pump location at Short Pump Town Center, to the delight of children who attended a sneak preview of the location July 10. The new facility, located under the forthcoming LL Bean store (formerly the food court) is 8,500 square feet in size – much larger than CMoR’s former Short Pump location at West Broad Village, which opened in 2010. The new space includes The CarMax Foundation Service Station, the Silver Diner, a grocery store, a performance stage and an art studio, as well as a giant Light Bright Wall. > Read more.
The Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Henrico Police are both presenting community events tomorrow, Aug. 1. The Feria Community Resource Fair at Richmond International Raceway brings together community service providers, embassies/consulates from Latin American countries, government agencies, nonprofit organizations and corporations that impact the Latino community. The Division of Police’s Community Day will feature demonstrations and displays from police, fire, animal protection and sheriff’s office, as well as family activities, food, entertainment and more.
