The “Pinta” and the “Nina,” replicas of Columbus’ ships, will be open for tours at Rocketts Landing, 251 Rocketts Way, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 25-27. The ships tour together as a new and enhanced “sailing museum” for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the “caravel,” a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and other early explorers. Admission for a walk-aboard, self-guided tour is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for students ages 5-16 and free for children under 4. The ships will leave Rocketts Landing June 3. The Butterflies LIVE exhibit is back May 25 to October 14 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave. Visitors will be able to walk among hundreds of butterflies in the North Wing of the Conservatory. The exhibit will also feature special plantings to provide food for the butterflies, allowing visitors to get an up-close view of the showy tropical species. Henley Street Theatre will present the Richmond premiere of “Yellowman” at 8 p.m. May 25-26 at the SPARC Center for the Performing Arts, 2106-A N. Hamilton St. The play is a coming-of-age drama, a family tragedy, a social critique and a moving love story that deals with racism, sexism, class prejudices and stereotypes. The Fourth Friday art show and reception featuring the art program at Henrico High School will take place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Art Works, 320 Hull St. Teacher Mary Scurlock guides her students through the many facets of art and the culmination of this work is the senior show at Art Works. The 10th annual Autism Society of Central Virginia 5K Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. at the Innsbrook Pavilion. There will also be refreshments, music, exhibitors and a Kids Fun Zone. All proceeds stay within the greater Richmond area; the 5K run/walk is the chapter’s primary fundraising event raising nearly $73,000 in 2011. Guitarist and songwriter Tom Martin will perform at 8 p.m. at Congregation Or Ami, 9400 W. Huguenot Rd. Martin’s music is described as “Celtic Fusion.” He will talk about various traditional styles that have inspired his own work and will perform traditional songs, as well as his own compositions. This is Richmond Folk Music’s final concert of the season. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. A Memorial Day weekend big band concert will take place on the front lawn of Christ Ascension Episcopal Church, 1704 W. Laburnum Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Joe Enroughty And His Royal Virginians will perform big band favorites. An area in front of the bandstand will be set up for dancing; bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on. Holman student named Miss Va. Coed Junior Teen


Holman Middle School student Victoria Nguyen recently was named Miss Virginia American Coed Junior Teen after competing in the Miss Virginia American Coed pageant in Williamsburg. She was the youngest competitor in her division. Nguyen now will advance to represent Virginia at the 2015 Miss American Junior Teen Pageant at Walt Disney World in Florida in November. > Read more.

Companion Extraordinaire to honor veterans May 14

Companion Extraordinaire Home Care and Skilled Services will be honoring veterans and current military members May 14 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 5311 Lakeside Avenue.

Companion Extraordinaire dedicated a hall in its new Lakeside office as a “Wall of Honor” and will be presenting 13 military service men and women with certificates as well as placing their service photos on the wall.

Henrico student among 3 vying for national $10,000 scholarship

Public vote open through Friday to select winner
Henrico resident Haley Malloy is one of three national finalists for a $10,000 scholarship, whose winner will be determined by the vote of the public.

Malloy is a finalist for The Goddard School Anthony A. Martino Scholarship, which is open annually to any high school junior or senior who graduated from a Goddard School pre-kindergarten or kindergarten program. Applicants are evaluated based upon the work ethic and perseverance they have demonstrated – two key characteristics of Martino, the founder of the Goddard School franchise system. > Read more.

CAT Theatre announces 2015-16 schedule, new partnership

Final performance of 2015 season – ‘Quartet’ – starts this week

CAT Theatre’s final show of its 51st season – Quartet by Ronald Harwood – will open May 22 and run through June 6. It will be the show’s Richmond-area premiere.

The theatre also announced its four-show schedule for its 52nd season, which will begin in October and continue into June 2016, and announced a new partnership with The Bifocals Theatre Project, an outreach program into senior communities in the Richmond region. > Read more.
