The Troudadours Theatre Community Group will present “Guys and Dolls” at 7:30 p.m. April 27 and at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. April 28 at the Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and children ages 12 and under. For details, call 714-6277.
The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will host a special recycling event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Twin Hickory Library, 5001 Twin Hickory Rd. Items accepted include televisions, computers, computer monitors, computer accessories, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, VCRs and camcorders, stereos, microwaves and more. Elko Middle School’s community bazaar, postponed from March 23, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 5901 Elko Rd. There will be 38 vendors, a car wash, food, a cub mobile race, scout sign-ups and more. Admission is free. For details, call 328-4110.
Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will host its 3rd annual Superhero Run at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Villa, 8000 Brook Rd. The 5K race is open to all ages and participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite superhero costumes. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers and prizes will be given to runners wearing the “most heroic” costumes. A post-race fair with moon bounces, face painting, games and other entertainment will follow. Registration fees are $10 to $30 in advance and $15 to $35 the day of the race. Local families are invited to “Take on Summer” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the annual Healthy Kids Day® and Walk, taking place at four YMCA branches, including Northside and Shady Grove in Henrico. The free community event, in partnership with Bon Secours Richmond Health System, helps families find fun through active play and educational opportunities. Each location will feature fun activities, including rock walls, pony rides, obstacle courses, McGruff Child ID stations, Food Fear Factor, Action Art Painting, relay races, face painting and more. St. Joseph’s Villa will hold its Bluegrass Ball at 6 p.m. on the Villa campus at 8000 Brook Rd. The event will raise funds for the Villa's Flagler Home, which serves homeless children and their families. The Bluegrass Ball is also the 18th Hoe-down to Stomp Homelessness. The Lonesome River Band and local favorite Cat Daddy will provide live entertainment. White House Catering will provide food. The 10th annual Connections 2012 resource fair for families of children with special needs will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Richmond-Central, 2626 W. Broad St. Special features include over 60 exhibitors, magician Jonathan Austin and other child-friendly entertainers, dental screenings, arts and crafts, pet therapy dogs, legal and financial consultations and more. The India Spring Fest 2012 will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 28-29 at the Hindu Center, 6051 Springfield Rd. The Henrico County Democratic Committee’s signature fundraiser “Battle for the Blue” will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Crossroads Arts Center, 2016 Staples Mill Rd. Aneesh Chopra, President Obama’s former chief technology officer, will speak on “Winning the Future through Open Innovation.” Dinner tickets are $50. Proceeds will help the committee build a strong grassroots base and will provide resources for voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote efforts. Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.
Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.
A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.
A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
