The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will host a special recycling event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Twin Hickory Library, 5001 Twin Hickory Rd. Items accepted include televisions, computers, computer monitors, computer accessories, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, VCRs and camcorders, stereos, microwaves and more. Elko Middle School’s community bazaar, postponed from March 23, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 5901 Elko Rd. There will be 38 vendors, a car wash, food, a cub mobile race, scout sign-ups and more. Admission is free. For details, call 328-4110.

Henrico East Rotary will host the 3rd annual Rockin’ the Raceway from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Colonial Downs in New Kent. Food and beverages will be for sale and The Remnants will provide live entertainment. Proceeds will support the Chickahominy YMCA and other charitable endeavors of Henrico East Rotary. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will host its 3rd annual Superhero Run at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Villa, 8000 Brook Rd. The 5K race is open to all ages and participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite superhero costumes. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers and prizes will be given to runners wearing the “most heroic” costumes. A post-race fair with moon bounces, face painting, games and other entertainment will follow. Registration fees are $10 to $30 in advance and $15 to $35 the day of the race. Local families are invited to “Take on Summer” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the annual Healthy Kids Day® and Walk, taking place at four YMCA branches, including Northside and Shady Grove in Henrico. The free community event, in partnership with Bon Secours Richmond Health System, helps families find fun through active play and educational opportunities. Each location will feature fun activities, including rock walls, pony rides, obstacle courses, McGruff Child ID stations, Food Fear Factor, Action Art Painting, relay races, face painting and more. St. Joseph’s Villa will hold its Bluegrass Ball at 6 p.m. on the Villa campus at 8000 Brook Rd. The event will raise funds for the Villa's Flagler Home, which serves homeless children and their families. The Bluegrass Ball is also the 18th Hoe-down to Stomp Homelessness. The Henrico County Democratic Committee’s signature fundraiser “Battle for the Blue” will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Crossroads Arts Center, 2016 Staples Mill Rd. Aneesh Chopra, President Obama’s former chief technology officer, will speak on “Winning the Future through Open Innovation.” Dinner tickets are $50. Proceeds will help the committee build a strong grassroots base and will provide resources for voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote efforts. County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
