The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will host a special recycling event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Twin Hickory Library, 5001 Twin Hickory Rd. Items accepted include televisions, computers, computer monitors, computer accessories, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, VCRs and camcorders, stereos, microwaves and more. Elko Middle School’s community bazaar, postponed from March 23, will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school, 5901 Elko Rd. There will be 38 vendors, a car wash, food, a cub mobile race, scout sign-ups and more. Admission is free. For details, call 328-4110.
Henrico East Rotary will host the 3rd annual Rockin’ the Raceway from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Colonial Downs in New Kent. Food and beverages will be for sale and The Remnants will provide live entertainment. Proceeds will support the Chickahominy YMCA and other charitable endeavors of Henrico East Rotary. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will host its 3rd annual Superhero Run at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Villa, 8000 Brook Rd. The 5K race is open to all ages and participants are encouraged to dress in their favorite superhero costumes. Medals will be awarded to the top finishers and prizes will be given to runners wearing the “most heroic” costumes. A post-race fair with moon bounces, face painting, games and other entertainment will follow. Registration fees are $10 to $30 in advance and $15 to $35 the day of the race. Local families are invited to “Take on Summer” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the annual Healthy Kids Day® and Walk, taking place at four YMCA branches, including Northside and Shady Grove in Henrico. The free community event, in partnership with Bon Secours Richmond Health System, helps families find fun through active play and educational opportunities. Each location will feature fun activities, including rock walls, pony rides, obstacle courses, McGruff Child ID stations, Food Fear Factor, Action Art Painting, relay races, face painting and more. St. Joseph’s Villa will hold its Bluegrass Ball at 6 p.m. on the Villa campus at 8000 Brook Rd. The event will raise funds for the Villa's Flagler Home, which serves homeless children and their families. The Bluegrass Ball is also the 18th Hoe-down to Stomp Homelessness. The Lonesome River Band and local favorite Cat Daddy will provide live entertainment. White House Catering will provide food. The 10th annual Connections 2012 resource fair for families of children with special needs will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Children’s Museum of Richmond-Central, 2626 W. Broad St. Special features include over 60 exhibitors, magician Jonathan Austin and other child-friendly entertainers, dental screenings, arts and crafts, pet therapy dogs, legal and financial consultations and more. Aneesh Chopra, President Obama’s former chief technology officer, will speak on “Winning the Future through Open Innovation.” Dinner tickets are $50. Proceeds will help the committee build a strong grassroots base and will provide resources for voter registration drives and get-out-the-vote efforts. Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
