Barksdale Theatre’s production of “Scorched Earth – A World Premiere” opens today and runs through May 20 at Barksdale’s Willow Lawn location, 1601 Willow Lawn Dr. Best-selling author and Richmond native David L. Robbins has adapted his suspense-filled, compassionate thriller for the stage. A rural Virginia community is torn apart when the tiny body of a stillborn, mixed-race baby is exhumed from the graveyard, and the neighboring church is burned to the ground. The presentation contains some profanity and is suggested for ages 14 and older. Tickets are $38 for adults, $35 for seniors and $19 for students. A presentation of “She Stoops to Conquer” will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall at the University of Richmond. “She Stoops to Conquer” celebrates chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family. The presentation is part of the groundbreaking series National Theatre Live (NT Live), which brings the best of British theatre direct from the stages of London to movie theatres around the world. The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority (CVWMA) will host a special recycling and shred ID theft event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Virginia Center Commons Mall, 10101 Brook Rd., and at St. Paul’s Baptist Church, 4247 Creighton Rd. Items accepted include televisions, computers, printers, scanners, copiers, fax machines, telephones and cell phones, VCRs and camcorders, stereos, microwaves and more. A $7 fee is charged to recycle all TVs but other electronic devices will be collected for free. “An Unforgettable Disaster: The Sinking of RMS Titanic” will take place at 2 p.m. at Tuckahoe Library, 1901 Starling Dr. In commemoration of the centenary of the Titanic disaster, Dr. Nicole Sackley of the University of Richmond will speak on its place in cultural memory. Every Sunday the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for family fun time with kids of all ages. The gym will be split in half with different sports each week on one half and a wide variety of games and activities like ping pong, billiards, air hockey and foosball on the other. Author, child abuse survivor to speak at Henrico event

To help celebrate twenty years of service to advocating for abused and neglected children in Henrico County, Henrico Court Appointed Special Advocates, Inc. (CASA) will host an evening with bestselling author K.L. Randis on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Belmont Recreation Center in Lakeside.

Randis is best known for her bestselling novel, Spilled Milk, which tells her painful – but ultimately triumphant – personal story of abuse and of child abuse prevention. The book is her first novel.

Philippines ambassador to the US visits Filipino Festival in Henrico


The Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. attended the Ninth Annual Filipino Festival at Our Lady of Lourdes Church earlier this month. Cuisia (pictured above with festival performers) was welcomed by County Manager John Vithoulkas and Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover (below) at the church, which is located in Lakeside.

While enjoying some of the cultural performances at the festival, the ambassador and his wife had a private lunch with Vithoulkas, Glover, Eldon Burton (an outreach representative from U.S. Senator Mark R. Warner’s Office) and Father James Begley, the pastor of OLL. > Read more.

The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen is seeking artists, crafters, and creative groups for three opportunities allowing creative thinkers and doers to design and display imaginative holiday decorations.

The center is seeking designs for:

• Illumination 2014 – A Festival of Trees: Artists can celebrate the holiday season by creating a one-of-a-kind Christmas tree filled with decorations to suit any unique or traditional theme. Past trees exhibited have included Buzz Lightyear; HEROES; Santa tree; Musicology; and many others. > Read more.
