The Moon Rats, a hip, new blue-country-rock-grass orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. at Henrico Theatre, 305 E. Nine Mile Rd. The once-in-a-lifetime U.K. National Gallery exhibit “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan” brings together the largest ever number of da Vinci’s paintings. Captured live at the gallery on the eve of the exhibition opening, “LEONARDO LIVE” offers an unprecedented opportunity for audiences worldwide to experience these da Vinci works. The Virginia Orchid Society will present its 2012 annual Orchid Show & Sale, “Orchids, Jewels of the Jungle,” at Strange’s Florist and Greenhouse, 12111 W. The 4th annual Race to Protect Children, to benefit Greater Richmond Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN), will be held in West Broad Village in Short Pump. The Kids 1-Mile Run will start at 8:30 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk will start at 9 a.m. Awards will be given. After the race, Dave & Buster’s will host a family festival. The 3rd annual Bluegrass Marathon Jam, benefitting the Richmond Fisher House at McGuire Veteran’s Medical Center, will be held from noon to midnight at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. The 12-hour jam will feature bands Copper Ridge, Cary Street Ramblers, East of Afton, Slack Family Bluegrass, Highway 249, Some Assembly Required, River City Band and Willis River Band. Attendees are invited to bring their own instruments for jam sessions. Admission is free but donations are accepted. The Gayton Kirk Presbyterian Church, 11421 Gayton Rd., will present “Mark Twain’s Civil War” at 7 p.m. A completely Richmond-created show based on Twain’s writings and speeches he gave to veterans groups, the play deals with issues of war, loyalties and faith. The one-night-only performance will be followed by a panel discussion with the director and local Civil War experts. The play is presented as part of The Acts of Faith Festival. Holman student named Miss Va. Coed Junior Teen


Holman Middle School student Victoria Nguyen recently was named Miss Virginia American Coed Junior Teen after competing in the Miss Virginia American Coed pageant in Williamsburg. She was the youngest competitor in her division. Nguyen now will advance to represent Virginia at the 2015 Miss American Junior Teen Pageant at Walt Disney World in Florida in November. > Read more.

Companion Extraordinaire to honor veterans May 14

Companion Extraordinaire Home Care and Skilled Services will be honoring veterans and current military members May 14 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at 5311 Lakeside Avenue.

Companion Extraordinaire dedicated a hall in its new Lakeside office as a “Wall of Honor” and will be presenting 13 military service men and women with certificates as well as placing their service photos on the wall.

Henrico student among 3 vying for national $10,000 scholarship

Public vote open through Friday to select winner
Henrico resident Haley Malloy is one of three national finalists for a $10,000 scholarship, whose winner will be determined by the vote of the public.

Malloy is a finalist for The Goddard School Anthony A. Martino Scholarship, which is open annually to any high school junior or senior who graduated from a Goddard School pre-kindergarten or kindergarten program. Applicants are evaluated based upon the work ethic and perseverance they have demonstrated – two key characteristics of Martino, the founder of the Goddard School franchise system. > Read more.

Disneynature’s ‘Monkey Kingdom’ is its strongest yet

“Did you know monkeys could swim?” asks Tina Fey in Monkey Kingdom. While she’s asking, a toque macaque (a two foot-long monkey with red-white fur and great hair) breast-strokes under the surface of a pond, yanking out lily pad flowers by her teeth and dragging them ashore to munch later.

Turns out monkeys can swim. And slide down telephone poles. And do the thing from Flashdance where you bring down a cascade of water on your head and shake it off in slow-motion.
