The 24th annual Richmond Boat Show will be at the Richmond Raceway Complex, 600 E. Laburnum Ave., from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 17, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 18 and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 19. Boats on display from 18 dealers include runabouts, saltwater fishing boats, ski boats, pontoon boats, deck boats, jet boats, PWCs, motor yachts and bass boats. Additional exhibits include boat lifts, floating docks, marine electronics, water sports and safety equipment. Experts will be on hand to give information and answer questions about marinas, financing, insurance, boat maintenance and repair and boating safety. A Good Natured Riot, a folk-funk ensemble with a jazzy soul, will perform at 8 p.m. at Ashland Coffee and Tea, 100 N. Learn about the hidden history of African Americans during the Civil War from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Dabbs House Museum, 3812 Nine Mile Rd. Explore the lives of enslaved blacks before and during the Civil War, such as the contributions of the United States Colored Troops on Henrico soil to the Union war effort. Also discover the Reconstruction-era struggle of African Americans and Henrico County’s attempts to assist them. Admission is free. A “U2charist” communion service featuring the music of rock band U2 will be held at 7 p.m. at Three Chopt Presbyterian Church, 9315 Three Chopt Rd. The service, which will include live and recorded U2 music, is free and open to the public. An offering will be collected to benefit Bread for Life, a relief and development organization that addresses spiritual and physical hunger in Africa, as well as the Central Virginia Food Bank. Emily Francis (left) of Richmond Green Drinks and Cary Jamieson of The Steward School checked out the cherry tomato crop Aug. 20 at the school's Bryan Innovation Lab following a visit by members of Green Drinks. Jamieson, director of the Bryan Innovation Lab, was among the speakers who pointed out various sustainable features of the building and its surroundings, including geothermal, solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy systems, as well as rain gardens and large storage cisterns (like the one pictured) to minimize groundwater pollution. > Read more.

Canterbury Recreation Association ‘wins’ the ‘Dunk Hunger’ drive


For the third consecutive year, the Canterbury Recreation Association in Short Pump donated the most meals to the fourth-annual "Dunk Hunger" campaign, which raises money and food donations for FeedMore's Central Virginia Food Bank. Swim teams and community pools throughout the region combined to raise the equivalent of 77,404 meals this year, with the Canterbury group earning the Gold Medal, with 17,454 meals contributed.

CRA will earn a winners’ bash Aug. 24 from 3 to 5 p.m. at its pool on Pump Road.

“Our pool has adopted Dunk Hunger into its culture with fun ways to raise food and funds," said Canterbury’s Dunk Hunger chairman Jack McSorley, a Freeman High School junior. > Read more.
