The Virginia Folk Music Association and The McShin Foundation will present the third annual Bluegrass Concert and Benefit from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, 2300 Dumbarton Rd. Participating bands include Copper Ridge, Heavy Duty, Willis River, Homeward Bound, Old Dogs New Tricks, Mill Run and East of Afton. The Pocahontas Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society will meet at 10 a.m. at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave. An exhibit by photographer Jackie Bailey Labovtiz, a specialist in Virginia wild flowers, will be in the Garden Library. The program is free and open to the public. The Chapter will hold a short business meeting after the presentation. Italian bluegrass guitar virtuoso Beppe Gambetta will perform at 8 p.m. at the Shady Grove Coffeehouse, located at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Glen Allen, 11105 Cauthorne Rd. Historian Emmanuel Dabney will present a lecture on education, emancipation and race in antebellum Richmond from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Dorey Recreation Center, 7200 Dorey Park Dr. The focus of his presentation will be on Silas Omohundro, a white slave trader in pre-Civil War Richmond and his third wife, Corinna, and their children were legally his human property. Several local organizations will partner to present the third annual RVA Environmental Film Festival Feb. 9-10 at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. The two-day event will showcase local and national films selected to raise awareness of environmental issues relevant to the Richmond region, the nation and the planet. There will be musical selections by the One Voice Chorus, an inspirational portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and highlighted accomplishments of the legendary African-American educator, Miss Virginia Estelle Randolph, performed by local talents Tony Cosby and Vivian Graves. Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
