The Heritage Music Series at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courtouse Rd., will kick off the season with a fundraiser at 7 p.m. Three local bands – Unfinished Business, Homeward Bound and Tredegar Brass Band – have volunteered their talents to raise money for the monthly concert series held free at the tavern. The 2012 Acts of Faith festival will kick off with a preview at 7 p.m. at the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre), 114 W. Broad St. The preview this year will be in memory of the late Helen Rolfe, a long-time member of Second Presbyterian Church, founder of the Acts of Faith festival. Participating theatres will talk about their selected plays and present brief scenes to give a taste of the upcoming festival. The event is free and open to the public. Survivor Day, a regional initiative being hosted by six different localities in the Central Virginia region, will take place at the Henrico Training Center, 7701 E. Parham Rd. The program, designed to help citizens increase their awareness of disasters and hazards in the region, will help residents be better prepared by learning how to put together a disaster supply kit, learn how to be safe after a disaster and help develop a family communications plan. Henrico’s session will include presentations from the Henrico Office of Emergency Management, the Divisions of Police and Fire, the Henrico Health Department and the National Weather Service. Belvidere St., will host an Artifacts Roadshow from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Curator Jesse Smith will view military artifacts from the community and tell the associated stories. Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members

The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs. > Read more.

The Rink to open at WBV Nov. 14

The grand opening of The Rink outdoor ice skating rink at West Broad Village will be held Saturday, Nov. 14, beginning at 11 a.m. with skating and family activities. At 4 p.m., grand opening festivities – featuring exhibitions of ice sculpting, ice skating and cheering, as well as fire pits, costumed characters, and food vendors – will begin. Skating costs are $8 for children and $10 for adults, with $4 skate rentals available. Parking is free. The Rink is located at 3939 Duckling Drive, Glen Allen.
