The Latin Ballet of Virginia will present its 11th anniversary performance of “The Legend of the Poinsettia” at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 6-7 and at 3 p.m. Jan. 7-8 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. The performance is an interpretation of the Mexican legend representing Christmas in Latin America. It tells the story of a pure-hearted young girl who discovers the true spirit of giving. This is the last weekend of Dominion GardenFest of Lights at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, 1800 Lakeside Ave. GardenFest is a holiday tradition that features more than a half million lights, botanical decorations, trains, holiday dinners, family activities and more. New this year are caroling on Tuesday nights, Peppermint Lane, a 250-foot tunnel of lights, whimsical fairy-house botanicals and more. GardenFest is a rain or shine event and runs nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Jan. 9. The Garden is closed Dec. 24-25. Admission is $11 for adults, $10 for seniors, $7 for children ages 3-12 and free for children under three; discounts available for Garden members. Dr. Mark Smith, of Brain Balance Center Richmond, will speak from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Dumbarton Library, 6800 Staples Mill Rd. Smith will discuss functional disconnection syndrome and the research that led to the Brain Balance approach to autism, AD/HD, dyslexia and other neurobehavioral disorders. ‘Proof of Heaven’ coming to Glen Allen


Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.

Alexander (pictured, at right, while Unity of Bon Air church member Harry Simmons interviews him) has written about what he considers to be his journey through the afterlife.

Tickets to this month's event are $25 and will support the new Bon Secours Hospice House being built later this year. > Read more.

Innsbrook Rotary celebrates 25 years


The Innsbrook Rotary Club, which is celebrating its 25th year in 2015, has completed a number of volunteer projects this year and raised thousands of dollars for various organizations through three events.

The club's annual rose sale, benefit for youth live auction and Virginia Fire Games competition, combined with individual and corporate donations, have raised nearly $70,000 – money that the club contributes back to the community.

FeedMore is the beneficiary of the club's 25th anniversary project, which provides refrigerated trailers to be used for the distribution of food throughout Central Virginia. > Read more.
