‘Step UP for Down Syndrome 5k’ planned

The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond (DSAGR) will hold its fifth annual Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival Saturday, Oct. 8 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Short Pump Town Center. The event, previously known as The Buddy Walk, features a 5K run/walk and a free family festival that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of children, teens and adults with Down syndrome.

“There’s a little bit of something for everyone, from live music to a pumpkin patch,” said Terri Lancaster, president of DSAGR. “But the real stars are our loved ones with Down syndrome, who continue to amaze us with everything they do. This event is for them and to raise awareness and funds to assist individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout Central Virginia.”

The 5k run/walk begins at 8:30 a.m.; it starts and finishes at the town center. (For details, visit http://www.tinyurl.com/DSAGR5K2011). A family festival will be held from 9 a.m. to noon (http://www.dsagr.com), and live music, children's activities, a pumpkin patch, Nutzy the Flying Squirrel and Ms. Wheelchair Virginia also will be part of the occasion. The Down syndrom Superstars Ceremony, recognizing Down syndrome individuals, will begin at 11:30 a.m.
