Lions Club peace contest accepting submissions

Students enrolled in Rolfe, Fairfield and Elko Middle Schools are invited to participate in the Lions International Contests, sponsored locally by the Richmond Battlefield Park Lions Club.

The 2012-13 theme is “Imagine Peace” and students may enter the essay contest or poster contest to express their feelings about peace. Essays must be no longer than 500 words in length, submitted in English, type-written in black ink and double spaced. Students entering the poster contest may use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil or paint.

Students who are ages 11-13 by Nov. 15 are eligible to participate. The contest is open to students who are visually impaired. The local winner’s entry will be submitted to District competition. One grand prize winner will receive an award of $5,000 from Lions Clubs International. Submission deadline is Sept. 28.

Four equality organizations are partnering to host a Virginia House of Delegates candidate forum at 6:30 p.m. at Ridge Elementary School. Equality Virginia, the Log Cabin Republicans – VA Chapter, the Richmond Business Alliance, and the Virginia Equality Bar Association will host the event for candidates seeking office in House of Delegates Districts 68, 72 and 73, each of which contains a portion of Henrico County. Participating candidates will give opening and closing statements and respond to questions on the issues of jobs and the economy, healthcare, LGBTQ equality and education. A “meet the candidate” session will precede at 5:45 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. Full text
