Elko Community Center to celebrate re-opening Oct. 27
|
Citizen Staff Reports 10/25/12
Henrico County will dedicate Elko Community Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 27 at 6216 White Oak Rd. in Sandston.
This event, which is open to the public, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature remarks by county officials, facility tours, children’s activities, games, exhibits, classic cars, food and music by Churchyard Grass. Built in 1924, the community center was a meeting place for the Windsor Club of Elko. During World War II the Elko community gained some historical significance when the United States military converted part of the Elko Tract into a decoy airfield in an effort to secure Byrd Airport. Overflow parking for the event is available at Elko Middle School. A shuttle will be provided.
