‘East-west’ fundraisers for Isaac to include ice show, yard sale

Friends and family of one-year-old Isaac Corbett ("New Life for Joy Boy," 3/15/12 Citizen) will hold a fundraising blitz May 5 in Henrico that will include a yard sale at Rocketts Landing followed by an ice show at SkateNation Plus in Short Pump.

The yard sale at Rocketts Landing will take place from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 5 in the Cedar Works parking lot at the corner of Route 5 & Orleans Street. Organizers are looking for donated items to sell (donate by May 2; details below), as well as shoppers and buyers at the sale, which will benefit the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA), a national charity that helps children and young adults who need or have had a lifesaving transplant.

Although the Corbett family has lived in Durham, N.C. since October (while Isaac undergoes treatment at Duke University Medical Center) their home is in the Rocketts Landing community. Isaac was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder only days before his first birthday, and has undergone more than 60 x-rays, seven surgeries, chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. The transplant is helping him to overcome Hurler Syndrome, a disorder that generally takes the lives of its victims at only five to six years of age without treatment. Isaac is doing well since his transplant, but he will need ongoing medical care throughout his life that is estimated to cost $60,000-$100,000.

The ice show, "Sk8 for Isaac," will be held from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. May 5 at SkateNation Plus. The rink owners have generously donated ice time, so admission to the event is free, but tax-deductible donations to COTA are welcome.

Before Natalie Corbett became pregnant with Isaac, she skated for the rink's adult synchro team, the Twizzlers, under the direction of Coach Stephanie Meier. Coach Stephanie and other coaches attended the baby shower for Isaac, and she has helped organize the U.S. Figure Skating-sanctioned event with the help of the Richmond Figure Skating Club and SkateNation Plus. The ice show will also include a silent auction of several gift baskets.

Whale of a treat

Ironfish delights with a variety of tasty catches

I was overjoyed to head back for another meal at Ironfish by Pescados, considered the Best New Restaurant in 2011 by both the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond Magazine. I agree whole-heartedly with their ratings. Since I first visited the restaurant for my birthday in January, I was waiting for the perfect special occasion to return. I couldn’t wait another year, obviously.

Run by the same restaurateurs as Pescados Latin Caribbean Seafood in Midlothian and Eat in Oregon Hill, Ironfish offers the same unique dishes and top-level customer service. > Read more.
