DRMD hopes to hit million-dollar mark

Deep Run High School’s 2013 Marathon Dance, a student-run function that aims to raise money for organizations around the community, will be held March 15-16 in the school’s gymnasium. In its seven-year history, the dance has raised more than $863,000, and this year the students’ goal is to break the $1 million mark. The event has progressed from a small dance in the high school gym to an event that brings the entire community together.

A total of 67 local organizations have benefited from the dances; a student committee chooses the recipients. This year’s recipients are: Brain Injury Association, Canine Companions, Center for High Blood Pressure, CJ’s Thumbs Up Foundation, Elijah House Academy, Galloping Acres, A Grace Place, Jackson-Feild Home, Messages Project, Richmond Friends of the Homeless, Safe Harbor and Sophie House.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The public is invited to attend the finale, which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday. Only registered dancers are permitted on the dance floor. Deep Run High School is located at 4801 Twin Hickory Rd. For more information and to donate, visit http://www.marathondance.org
