Black History Month celebration scheduled for Feb. 10 in Glen Allen
|
Citizen Staff Reports 02/08/13
Henrico County will celebrate Black History Month with an afternoon of musical reflection, portrayals and historical interpretation beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10 in the auditorium at The Academy at Virginia Randolph, 2204 Mountain Rd. in Glen Allen. Admission is free.
This program aims to highlight two anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington. Opening the event will be musical selections offered by One Voice Chorus, a diverse community singing group. Local actor Tony Cosby will be portraying Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with an interpretation of his “I Have a Dream” speech. Henrico historian Elvatrice Belsches, who served as art department researcher for Steven Spielberg’s movie, Lincoln, will provide an enlightening presentation on the Emancipation Proclamation. The event also will commemorate the legendary Henrico African American educator Virginia Estelle Randolph, portrayed by Vivian Graves. Guests will be invited to accompany “Miss Randolph” on a tour of the Virginia Randolph Museum. A Black History Month Art Exhibit provided by Henrico County Public Schools will also be on display in the museum. Virginia Randolph Museum was built in 1937 and was the home economics cottage for the Virginia Randolph Education Center. In 1974, this structure was dedicated as a museum in honor of Randolph and is a National Register Landmark.
