‘America Recycles Day’ is today

America Recycles Day, recognized annually on Nov.15, is designed to celebrate the successes of recycling while providing an educational platform that helps raise awareness about the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling throughout the year.

America Recycles Day is a national initiative of non-profit Keep America Beautiful,Inc.(KAB). Millions of Americans have pledged to increase their recycling habits at home and at work over the 14-year history of ARD,a nationally-recognized initiative dedicated to encouraging people to recycle more at home,at work, and on the go.

Event organizers will proudly declare “I Recycle. Do you?” at events throughout November, designed to educate, motivate and inspire individuals to recycle more while encouraging their friends and families to do the same.People around the country are uniting around the practice of recycling; America Recycles Day 2009 featured more than 850 registered organizations conducting more than 2,500 events.

Online registration is now open at http://AmericaRecyclesDay.org for local organizers to schedule events in their communities and gain access to resources, such as best practices guides, posters (on recycled paper),banners (made from recycled plastic bottles),pencils (made from recycled newspaper), buttons (made from recycled steel), and more. Access to the materials and/or downloadable resources are available to any organization ranging from state and municipal governments to local “green teams” or scouting troops.

Many collateral materials are offered “first-come,first served," so early registrations are highly encouraged. Events can be scheduled any time during the month of November, but should be held as close to Nov. 15 as possible.

New opportunities for high profile events are being offered for 2011.For the first time ever,in partnership with KAB, Walmart locations nationwide are inviting local organizers to hold America Recycles Day educational tabletop events at their stores on Saturday,Nov.12. If you are looking for a high-traffic location for a recycling awareness event, this is a great opportunity.

Details on holding events at Walmart stores are available to registrants as part of theorganizers’ “Go-to Guide.”

Additionally, KAB has joined forces with the College and University Recycling Coalition to produce new resources and guidelines for hosting America Recycles Day events at NCAA football games and tailgating events in collaboration with the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency’s “Game Day Challenge” initiative. More information on this program can be found at http://AmericaRecyclesDay.org.

America’s leading companies and organizations support recycling through sponsorships and partnerships with America Recycles Day 2011: American Chemistry Council, Anheuser-Busch, Earth911.com, Disney’s Friends for Change, Naked Juice, Nestlé Waters North America, PepsiCo and Waste Management. Travinia brings contemporary elegance to Willow Lawn

It was another win for Willow Lawn when Travinia Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar opened there six months ago, nestled in the heart of the re-made shopping center. The contemporary American Italian restaurant boasts 13 locations up and down the East Coast, with the Henrico location opening in August.

In the same week, I hit up Travinia twice, once for lunch and once for a late dinner. At lunchtime on a weekday, I was overwhelmed by the smell of garlic and by the number of working professionals in nice suits on their lunch breaks. When we first walked in, I was concerned our meal would be a little too pricey based on the décor – it’s a really nice place. Luckily, the menu has a variety of options for every budget. > Read more.

‘SpongeBob’ movie energizes with wit, laughter

There’s a ton of sugar in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Literal sugar, as SpongeBob Squarepants (Tom Kenny) and Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) inhale their own weight in cotton candy and eat ice cream, one scoop per mouthful.

At one point we burrow into the brain of our boxy yellow hero and discover the inner workings of his brain: googly-eyed cakes and candies that giggle and sing. All of which is extremely appropriate for a film like Sponge Out of Water. Because not only is the movie sweet (the “awwww” kind of sweet), but it’s the equivalent of a 30-candy bar sugar rush, zipping between ideas like a sponge on rocket skates.

The story under all this is really not that complicated. SpongeBob flips burgers at the Krusty Krab. > Read more.
