The fourth annual Richmond Bluegrass Marathon Jam will take place from noon to midnight at the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, 2880 Mountain Rd. Twenty regional bluegrass bands including Jackass Flats, Slack Family Band, River City Band, The Green Boys and East Afton will perform. The Henrico Humane Society will hold its 14th annual Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Showplace, 3000 Mechnicsville Tnpk. There will be obedience demonstrations, dog adoptions, puppy races, contests and more. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 2-12. This is HHS’s largest fundraiser of the year and all proceeds will be used to cover expenses, including medical, for the animals in HHS’s care. Virtuoso fiddle and banjo duo Alan Jabbour and Ken Perlman will perform at 8 p.m. at the Shady Grove Coffeehouse, located at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Glen Allen, 11105 Cauthorne Rd. Jabbour and Perlman will present a concert of Appalachian tunes, featuring most prominently the music Jabbour learned in the 1960s from his mentor, West Virginia fiddler Henry Reed. The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond will present the Shanghai Quartet with Paul Neubauer (viola) at 7:30 p.m. in Camp Concert Hall, Booker Hall of Music. The Shanghai Quartet’s style melds the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire. Neubauer’s performance will include the Brahms Quintet in G Major, op. 111. Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
