In order to raise Alzheimer’s awareness, J.R. Tucker High School will be the first high school in the country to host a “We Back Pat” basketball game in support of the Pat Summitt Foundation. Pat Summitt is the former head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers, and was diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. After her diagnosis, she decided to start the Pat Summitt foundation to promote Alzheimer’s awareness. Tucker will play Thomas Jefferson at 6 p.m. (girls varsity basketball) and 7:30 p.m. (boys varsity basketball) at the school, 2910 N. Parham Rd. To commemorate Black History Month in February, the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site will present “Matinees with Miss Maggie,” a free film and lecture series that will explore African American life in Richmond and Virginia and the tragedies, triumphs, strength and courage of those who struggled for equality. Films will take place every Saturday in February at 1 p.m. at 600 N. 2nd St. The first film is “Our Inspiration: The Story of Maggie Lena Walker” and will be presented by two of the 34 black college students arrested for sitting at a lunch counter at Thalhimer’s on Feb. 22, 1960. The exhibit “Designed to Perfection: Mark Catesby’s Natural History” at Wilton House Museum, 215 S. Wilton Rd., ends today. Wilton commemorates the 300th anniversary of Catesby’s arrival in Virginia in 1712 with an exhibition featuring nearly 50 etchings from this seminal work along with prints by other notable naturalists of England and North America. Short Pump Rotary volunteers help with rebuild, repair


On June 13, the Short Pump Rotary Club partnered with Schnabel Engineering for a day of volunteer work with Rebuilding Together Richmond. Team members (among them [from left] Chris Rufe, Melissa Abraham, Rick Naschold, and Micky Ogburn) completed a variety of repairs and home improvements ranging from painting and landscaping to cabinet installation and fence building.

“It was a privilege to be involved in this project," said club president Melissa Abraham. "The homeowner kept thanking the volunteers, but I think all of us would agree we are the ones who actually benefited. It was an opportunity to help a community member, fellowship with great people and improve our handyman skills." > Read more.

‘Proof of Heaven’ coming to Glen Allen


Dr. Even Alexander, a New York Times best-selling author who has been featured on Oprah and Dr. Oz, was in town last week to promote his June 27 talk, "Proof of Heaven," at Glen Allen High School.

Alexander (pictured, at right, while Unity of Bon Air church member Harry Simmons interviews him) has written about what he considers to be his journey through the afterlife.
