Christmas mother receives donations from Martin’s

Short Pump Martin’s Store Manager Beth Davis (at right) presents two checks to Henrico Christmas Mother Dorothy Tatem totaling $19,625 last month. The donations included a $5,000 gift from Martin’s and contributions of $14,625 from Martin’s customers.

The Henrico Christmas Mother program assisted more than 1,900 families last month, providing gifts, toys, clothes and other items to families, children and adults in need.

The Martin’s donations put the program over the $100,000 donation level for the year.

Martin’s also sold discounted gift cards to the Christmas Mother program, which then distributed them to program participants.

Virginia's three-day tax-free holiday begins this Friday, Aug. 4, and continues through Sunday, Aug. 6. During the three-day event, the state sales tax is waived for qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items and Energy Star and WaterSense products.

Qualified school supplies of less than $20 per item, qualified clothing and shoes of less than $100 per items and portable generators of less than $1,000 per item are among those covered by the event.

In addition, many retailers are offering to pay the tax on other items themselves during the event.
