Lions Club peace contest accepting submissions

Students enrolled in Rolfe, Fairfield and Elko Middle Schools are invited to participate in the Lions International Contests, sponsored locally by the Richmond Battlefield Park Lions Club.

The 2012-13 theme is “Imagine Peace” and students may enter the essay contest or poster contest to express their feelings about peace. Essays must be no longer than 500 words in length, submitted in English, type-written in black ink and double spaced. Students entering the poster contest may use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil or paint.

Students who are ages 11-13 by Nov. 15 are eligible to participate. The contest is open to students who are visually impaired. The local winner’s entry will be submitted to District competition. One grand prize winner will receive an award of $5,000 from Lions Clubs International. Submission deadline is Sept. 28.

The Plants of the James River Project will present “The Art of Invasion,” a family-friendly event from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the James River Park System headquarters. Learn about invasive versus native plants; participate in guided walks and art activities; and make leaf rubbings and paper from invasive weeds. The headquarters building is located at the Reedy Creek Canoe Access, 4001 Riverside Dr. Park and walk through the Reedy Creek parking area. Cross the railroad tracks, turn right, and continue to the HQ building on your left.
