The 13th annual James River Regional Cleanup will take place at multiple sites among several river localities on Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will spend the morning sprucing up the river and several tributary streams by picking up trash.

In addition to volunteers who clean along shoreline areas and trails, boaters also play a crucial role. Paddlers and power-boaters are able to collect floating trash and access shoreline trash that’s difficult to reach by foot. Much of the trash collected is the result of litter that is carried by rain runoff along roadside ditches to streams, and eventually to the James River.

Sponsored by the James River Advisory Council, in cooperation with the James River Association, the James River Regional Cleanup is the largest one-day river cleanup in the region. Last year, volunteers collected hundreds of bags of trash and recyclable materials in just a few hours.
