The 6th annual 2012 Boomer Ball will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Hotel John Marshall, 101 N. Fifth St. Disco will be the theme and disco attire is welcome. Enjoy live music from The Janitors who will play a wide assortment of hits from 60s soul, 70s funk, country, classic rock and top 40s. There will also be a cocktail buffet from Homemades by Suzanne, live and silent auctions, a cash bar and more. Tickets are $60 per person and include one drink. The Sikh Association of Central Virginia (SACVI) will host the 10th annual “Festival of Punjab” or “Punjab Mela” from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Cultural Center of India in Chester, Va. Now in its fifth year, the Lakeside Farmers’ Market will open for its regular season from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the outdoor pavilion located at 6110 Lakeside Ave. Vendors offer local, seasonal farm-fresh produce, meats, cheeses, eggs, baked goods, tea, cut flowers, bedding plants, herbs, preserves, fudge, chocolate, handmade crafts and more. APRIL 1
The Richmond Triangle Players will present the central Virginia premiere of “bare,” a pop opera, at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. at the RTP Theatre, 1300 Altamont Ave. The story focuses on two gay high school students and their struggles at their private, Catholic boarding school. “bare” will be presented as a concert reading. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. A special brunch bar menu will be available at the early show. At 9 p.m. the Ghost Light After Party returns with the friendliest cabaret show in town. Special guests include Robyn O’Neil, Robert Throckmorton and Joseph Papa. Every Sunday the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center will be open from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. for family fun time with kids of all ages. The gym will be split in half with different sports each week on one half and a wide variety of games and activities like ping pong, billiards, air hockey and foosball on the other. The Short Pump Ruritan/Civic Association Foundation, Inc. recently presented a check for $50,000 to the Virginia War Memorial Educational Foundation. Fan Care offers heat relief to seniors

Qualifying senior citizens can receive free relief from summer heat through the 23rd annual Fan Care program, which provides fans and cooling assistance to seniors 60 and older in need.

The program is an initiative of Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging for seniors who meet income eligibility requirements and have a situation that threatens their health. > Read more.

A community ‘Kaffeehaus’ in Henrico’s Far West End

Born and raised in good old Europe, I am quite familiar with the traditional Austro-Hungarian tradition of the Kaffeehaus, an institution that represents a lifestyle of relaxing and thinking in a familiar environment with coffee, pastry, news, good service, marble tables, subdued sounds like the click-clack of the coffee machine, mugs and plates, conversations among patrons and with staff and a bit of low volume Johann Strauss music.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.

Food trucks arrive in the West End

West End residents no longer have to pick between fighting the summer mall crowds for a quick bite or breaking the bank to eat at a fine-dining spot because one Richmond group is bringing both to them.

RVA Street Foodies, the organization behind the outdoor food truck courts at the Virginia Historical Society and Hardywood Brewery, debuted its new Henrico food truck court at All Saints Episcopal Church on River Road May 22. > Read more.
