Several Virginia organizations will host a two day community forum on one of America’s hidden tragedies – the challenges facing America’s foster care youth. To kick off the event, Jimmy Wayne will perform on Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Camp Concert Hall at the University of Richmond. Wayne, a former homeless teen and foster youth, will perform country hits while sharing stories about his life in the foster care system. The Virginia premiere of “From Place to Place” will take place at 2 p.m. at the Byrd Theatre, 2908 W. Cary St. The documentary tells the stories of Raif, Mandy and Micah, who grew up in foster care in Montana and how they faced life aging out of the system with little support. The 9th Annual Children’s Hospital Foundation 5K/10K Walk/Run & Kids Mascot Mile will be held at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond, 2924 Brook Rd. The Kids Mascot Mile for ages 5-10 starts at 8:30 a.m. All children will receive a participation ribbon and a goody bag of treats at the finish line. The 10K will start at 9 a.m. and the 5K will start at 9:15 a.m. Local radio stations will provide music throughout the race course and there will be a post-race breakfast, health fair, kid’s festival, a decorated stroller contest and more. The 5th Annual Step Up for Down Syndrome 5K & Family Festival will be held rain or shine at Short Pump Town Center. The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a free family festival following from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be live music from The Groove Motive, children’s entertainment, exhibitors, a pumpkin patch, prizes and a ceremony honoring all individuals with Down Syndrome. Varina High School, 7053 Messer Rd., will host its 3rd annual Blue Devil Dash 5K Run/Walk at 8 a.m. This flat course is set to be run/walked by the Varina community, going past John Rolfe Middle School and Baker Elementary School, as well as the greater Richmond community. A Kids’ one-mile Fun Run, for ages 12 and under, will start at 8 a.m. and the 5K Run/Walk will begin at 8:30 a.m. The purpose of the event is to encourage physical activity among Varina students, faculty and community members, as well as help raise funds for student activities, campus beautification and scholarships. The 30th annual Festival of India will be held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 8-9 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. The festival offers a unique opportunity to celebrate and explore India’s diverse culture and traditions, including authentic regional food, arts, crafts and entertainment. There will also be vendors selling traditional Indian clothing, jewelry, movies and music and offering services such as fortune telling, henna and face painting. Admission is free. The 10th Annual Ztoberfest Car Show will begin at 9 a.m. at Sheehy Nissan in Mechanicsville, 6564 Mechanicsville Tnpk. This people’s choice show will be open to Z cars of all eras, as well as to other performance-oriented Nissan and Infinity vehicles. Judging will take place at 12 p.m. and awards will be distributed at 3 p.m. Trophies will be awarded in the following categories: Best in Show, Club Choice, Dealer’s Choice, Longest Distance, Diamond in the Rough and more. Registration fees are $25 to $75. There will also be door prizes, raffles and food for sale. Proceeds will benefit ASK Childhood Cancer Foundation. The West Broad Village FUNdraises for a Cure will launch with a celebratory “Tickled Pink Party” from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Wine Loft, 4305 Whittall Way. Additionally, there will be a French Boutique Fashion Show with breast cancer survivors (some West Broad Village residents) modeling chic and unique fashions and the Sweet Spot candy store and a VCU fashion design graduate will unveil candy-crafted fashions designed for children of breast cancer survivors in a spin-off of the popular “Project Runway” show. Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display.
