Henrico residents devise challenge, capture finalist spot

Henrico resident Sarah Metzgar earned a spot as a finalist in a recent school supplies challenge to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond.

Challenge participants had three weeks to see how far they could stretch $10 on school supplies, and Metzgar took third place by purchasing $302 worth of supplies with her $10.  The winner collected $567 and the second-place finisher gathered $449 in supplies.

Winners were announced Aug. 25 at a Midlothian Kroger store, at which the top three “super savers” were awarded gift cards for $200, $100 and $50.   (Above, Carl York of Kroger poses with Metzgar and her daughter, Shannon.)

Kroger also awarded the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond a monetary donation of $1,000.   The total value of school supply donations, which were passed on to the Boys and Girls Club, exceeded $3,000.

Henrico resident Alison Brown and another local resident, Eleanor Ross, came up with the idea for the challenge.  Last year, the two women -- who both blog about saving money in Richmond -- held a frugal challenge in which four friends spent $40 and collected more than $500 worth of school supplies.  This year, they decided to build on their success and open the competition to the public.
