Meals on Wheels seeks Eastern Henrico volunteers

Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia is seeking volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound residents along routes in Highland Springs. Deliveries are scheduled weekdays between 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. The minimum volunteer commitment is a couple hours at least one weekday per month, though additional shifts are available.

Meals on Wheels collaborates with local agencies, donors and volunteers to meet the needs of many of these homebound seniors and disabled adults in Henrico County and throughout the region. Some are frail with limited incomes. Others are ill or perhaps recovering from surgery, most live alone and many suffer from chronic hunger.

“The cost of food and disabilities keep me from acquiring food that is good for me,” said a local Meals on Wheels client. “This has given me at least one healthy meal a day.”

Another homebound senior wrote, “I don't have to try & prepare food holding on to my walker.”

In Henrico alone, 250 nutritious meals are delivered every weekday from FeedMore’s Community Kitchen to MOW clients. The meals are designed to be wholesome and customized to each client’s specific dietary requirements.

In addition to the meals, volunteers provide caring safety checks and bring smiles to brighten the days of their clients.

“It’s a real pleasure to do something for people in need,” said David Irving, who along with his wife, Ruth, began delivering meals to MOW clients in Highland Springs two months after he retired in 1995. They still volunteer every Wednesday more than 15 years later.

“The time may come when we have to be participants instead of volunteers,” Irving said. “But for now, it’s nice to have something to prove that you can be used in a good way.”
