Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden raises admission $1

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s admission has increased by $1 across all categories. Admission is now $12 for adults; $11 for seniors ages 55 and older; and $8 for children ages 3–12. Admission remains free for children ages 3 and younger and for members.

The last price increase was in 2011, before the Garden consistently hosted Butterflies LIVE! (which is included with admission).

St. Mary’s Hospital celebrates 45 years

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital celebrated its 45th anniversary Sept. 10 with a Parisian-market-themed picnic featuring French foods, mimes, children’s activities and a history of nursing tent.

On hand to celebrate were a number of young “alumni” of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), who had a chance to reunite with the nurses and doctors who cared for them as newborns. }

Church offers free ribbons to mark Sept. 11

An Eastern Henrico church is encouraging community members to hang ribbons in honor of the tenth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.}

Glen Allen teen wins Junior Teen award

Davina Ariana Seoparsan of Glen Allen (pictured above) recently won the title of National U.S.A. Ambassador Junior Teen. A rising sophomore in the International Baccalaureate program at J. R. Tucker High School, Seoparsan also won the talent, spokesmodel, actress, modeling, academic and volunteer service awards. }

St. Mary’s Hospital to celebrate 45 years

Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital will celebrate its 45th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 10 with a Parisian market-themed picnic from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fountain Green on the hospital campus at 5801 Bremo Road. }

Henrico residents devise challenge, capture finalist spot

Henrico resident Sarah Metzgar earned a spot as a finalist in a recent school supplies challenge to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond.

Challenge participants had three weeks to see how far they could stretch $10 on school supplies, and Metzgar took third place by purchasing $302 worth of supplies with her $10. The winner collected $567 and the second-place finisher gathered $449 in supplies. }

Miss Henrico, Mrs. Henrico pageants open

Applications are now being accepted for the titles of 2012 “Miss Henrico County” and “Mrs. Henrico County.” “Miss” and “Mrs.” will have the honor of representing her area at the Miss Virginia International Pageant, to be held Oct. 7-8 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. }

Local charities eligible for Richmond Unite funds

Richmond Unite, a nonprofit organization that supports local charities that serve youngsters, has opened the online voting component of its charity project, allowing citizens to vote for one charity a day until Sept. 8. Among those eligible for votes to receive donations are several Henrico organizations. Members of the public can vote for their favorite charities at http://www.richmondunite.org/vote-now/.

Filipino Festival returns Aug. 12-13

The sixth-annual Filipino Festival will be held Aug. 12-13 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Road in Henrico.

The event, designed to celebrate Filipino culture, is expected to attract nearly 10,000 visitors this year. It is sponsored by the church, and all proceeds benefit local charities sponsored by the church, including Lamb’s Basket, Laura’s Closet and the OLL Food Pantry. Admission is free.
