Lewis Ginter to host Fall PlantFest Sept. 15-16


Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s Fall PlantFest plant sale will take place Friday, Sept. 15 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Forty-two vendors will offer a variety of plants and garden/nature-related items for sale. Local Master Gardeners and volunteers also will be available to offer suggestions and answer questions.

Free legal services for seniors, disabled available Sept. 14


Seniors and disabled citizens will be able to receive free legal assistance Sept. 14 as part of 'Senior Law Day,' a partnership between Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging, and the Williams Mullen Law Firm.

The agencies will provide participants with three life-planning documents: wills, durable powers of attorney, and advance medical directives (living wills) to older adults and persons with disabilities. The documents will be prepared confidentially by volunteer attorneys and executed on site.

Summer concert series at Short Pump Town Center starts Thursday

National recording artist Toad the Wet Sprocket kicks-off the Summer Concert Series at Short Pump Town Center on Thursday, June 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the main plaza. Toad the Wet Sprocket was one of the most successful alternative rock bands in the early 90s. The band achieved fame with their album “Fear” (released in 1991) and the singles “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean” reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The Summer Concert Series will continue every Thursday night until August 16. Admission is free. Town center retailers will offer giveaways and a $500 Short Pump Town Center gift card will be given away at each concert.

‘Bassmaster’ competition continues at Osborne Park

The 2012 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open started June 14 and runs through Saturday, June 16 out of Osborne Park and Boat Landing in Henrico. Enthusiasts are invited to watch the morning launches from Osborne Park, located at 9530 Osborne Tnpk. Take-off time is set for 6 a.m.

Weigh-in Friday will begin at 2 p.m. The final weigh-in will be at Bass Pro Shops in Ashland, 11550 Lakeridge Pkwy. Admission is free. For details, visit http://www.basspro.com.

Modlin Center for the Arts announces 2012-13 season

The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond will open the 2012-13 season on Thursday, Sept. 6 with a live broadcast of the National Theatre of London’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” This new production, based on the international best-selling novel by Mark Haddon and adapted for the stage by Simon Stephens, will be the first of a scheduled 84 events and 113 performances presented by ModlinArts, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Music.

Charity flag football game at Highland Springs HS

The Virginia State Police and the Virginia Hornets will face off again to help raise awareness and contributions to support Special Olympics Virginia. The flag football game will be held Saturday, June 16 at Highland Springs High School, 15 S. Oak Ave. Gates open at noon and the game starts at 1 p.m.
