Glen Allen student to perform at Carnegie Hall

Thanks to a first-place win in The American Protege International Vocal Competition 2014, Glen Allen High School student Matija Tomas will travel to New York City to perform at Carnegie Hall in December.

At the first-place winners recital in Weill Hall, Matija will perform Giacomo Puccini’s opera aria, “Chi il bel sogna di doretta.” She will perform with other vocalists from around the world and have the opportunity to win other awards and scholarships.

Locally, Thomas has performed with Richmond’s renowned Glorious Christmas Nights, Christian Youth Theatre, and WEAG’s Urban Gospel Youth Choir.

UR chef carves pumpkins for White House event

University of Richmond executive chef Glenn Pruden helped create a spooky graveyard of pumpkin skeletons, headstones, bony hands and vultures on the White House lawn Saturday.

Pruden worked on a team of carvers that included the winners of Food Network’s Pumpkin Challenge and $50,000 carving competition. James Parker of Veggy Art in Chantilly organized the White House team and invited Pruden to participate.

Parker recently trained university dining services employees in the art of carving fruits and vegetables and is the current Food Network Fruit Sculpture Challenge champion. Pruden said he was the “new guy” on the team, although he has been carving for many years.}

Milestones

John Hutcheson, Jr., son of Rossie and Randy Hutcheson; Graham Jones, son of The Rev. and Mrs. Gary D. Jones; and Warren Snead, III, son of Brenda and Warren L. Snead, Jr., of Richmond, were recently inducted into the Order of Gownsmen at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. The Order of the Gowsnmen is a unique student government body among U.S. colleges and universities. Since 1875 the Order of Gownsmen has remained the body responsible for maintaining the spirit, traditions, and ideals of the University of the South. The wearing of the gown is both a sign of academic achievement and a promise to continue the ideals and traditions of the university.}

Milestones

Navy Midshipman Peyton B. Walsh, son of Mary O. and Patrick B. Walsh of Glen Allen, recently completed Plebe Summer while attending the U.S. Naval Academy. Plebe Summer is the summer training program required of all incoming freshmen to the naval academy. Walsh will go on to complete the academic year as a midshipman. He is a 2010 graduate of Deep Run High School.}

Dorey Dog Park to open Oct. 15

Henrico County's first county-built dog park will open Saturday, Oct. 15 at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road in Varina. A grand opening and dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. The one-acre park will feature sections for large and small dogs, exercise play equipment, water fountain and spray water features. The first 200 dogs Oct. 15 will receive a giveaway, and attendees can take their dog's photo with Snoopy and Sparky the Fire Dog.
