Henrico school, businesses, organizations earn Active RVA awards

Active RVA hosted the fourth-annual RVA Awards May 17, recognizing organizations throughout the Richmond area that create a culture of daily physical activity and encourage active lifestyle.

During the event, Active RVA announced that it had given the Richmond region a grade of B- on its fitness scorecard.

The HHHunt Rivermill Project received the Active RVA Development Certification. Organizations were evaluated along five fundamental areas: space, connectivity, signage, amenities, and buildings. Active RVA presented its Infrastructure Award to the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, which recognizes a project with a positive impact on the active infrastructure of the region.

Active RVA, a program of Sports Backers, has announced the addition of a development certification to the Active RVA Awards.

The Active RVA Certification and Awards program highlights and recognizes organizations throughout the Richmond region that create a culture of daily physical activity and encourage active lifestyles. Certifications for cevelopment and early childhood education are new in 2017, and they join workplaces and schools as areas that can be Active RVA-certified for supporting physical activity.

Anthem LemonAid opens registration for July 14-16


Registration for Anthem LemonAid is now open, and Richmond-area families, businesses and community organizations can look forward to joining together this summer to support local kids with cancer.

It’s free to participate and supplies are provided; just register to set up a lemonade stand the weekend of July 14-16. Every registered participant will receive lemonade mix, cups, a pitcher, a banner, stickers and sunglasses.

Reunion planned for Henrico HS’s first 4 classes

In honor of their 45th reunion, the Henrico High School class of 1967 will host a celebration on Sept. 29 at the Torque Club at Richmond International Raceway. The theme is "Fifty Years of Friendship" to commemorate the opening of Henrico High School in 1962. An invitation has been extended to the HHS classes of '65, '66 and '68 to join the party. These four classes represent the original student body of HHS.

Weekend Top 10


The Henrico Theatre is the place to be this weekend! A Highland Springs native returns to perform on Friday and The Taters will take the stage Saturday. Also performing is the Henrico Theatre Company – this is the last weekend to see their show “Cocoanuts.” Besides supporting local theater, there are some great opportunities to support local nonprofits – dance at Saxon Shoes or help end childhood obesity at Dorey Park. Extension seeks volunteers for ‘Master Food’ training course

The Henrico County office of the Virginia Cooperative Extension will co-sponsor a four-week program this fall to train volunteers to serve as community experts in basic nutrition, meal planning and healthy cooking techniques.

The Master Food Volunteer Program is being introduced to residents of Henrico, Chesterfield County and the city of Richmond to promote nutrition and wellness. The program is modeled after the Master Gardener Program, which trains residents to serve the community as experts in horticulture.

Innsbrook Rotary earns international recognition

The Innsbrook Rotary Club is gaining international acknowledgement after earning one of the foundation’s most distinguished honors, the Presidential Citation Award. The award comes at an exciting time for the club as its membership rate is stronger than ever, consisting of vibrant and accomplished business and professional leaders in the area.

Rotary Clubs started more than 100 years ago and now have 1.2 million members worldwide who volunteer in communities at home and abroad. Their goals are to convey the humanitarian spirit by supporting education and job training, providing clean water, combating hunger and improving health and sanitation, supporting the Rotary motto, a commitment to “Service Above Self.”
