Agencies combine on new entry point to Chickahominy


Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.

The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years.

Dorey Dog Park to open Oct. 15

Henrico County's first county-built dog park will open Saturday, Oct. 15 at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road in Varina. A grand opening and dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. The one-acre park will feature sections for large and small dogs, exercise play equipment, water fountain and spray water features. The first 200 dogs Oct. 15 will receive a giveaway, and attendees can take their dog's photo with Snoopy and Sparky the Fire Dog.

Fall festivals abound

Oct. 15 – Henrico County’s annual Harvest Festival will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Meadow Farm, 3400 Mountain Rd., featuring hands-on activities and demonstrations, pony rides, a petting zoo, tethered hot air balloon rides, the Great Pumpkin Patch of Meadow (ages 3-12) and more. Scarecrow festival arrives in Lakeside

Scarecrows (like this one at the Lakeside Farmers’ Market) are popping up throughout Lakeside this month, as part of the Lakeside Business Association’s second annual scarecrow festival. Participating businesses and organizations in the region will display their themed scarecrows all month and collect donations of food for the LAMB’s Basket food bank and pet food for the Richmond SPCA. Citizens can vote for their favorite scarecrows at http://www.LakesideAvenue.net }

‘Snagadate’ Heart Association fundraiser planned Oct. 13

The third-annual "Snagadate," a fundraiser for the American Heart Association, will be held this Thursday, Oct. 13, at Aloft Richmond West's xyz bar in Glen Allen, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Former NBC12 news anchor Gene Cox will host the event, and heart-disease survivor Andy Hrabovsky, a professional auctioneer, will preside over live bidding for themed date packages donated by local and regional businesses.}

Girls in foster care meet princess

Twenty young girls in foster care under Henrico County’s Department of Social Services came to the Gottwald Playhouse at Richmond Centerstage hoping to meet a Disney princess, and left with new-found friends.

The forum, There is a Princess Tiana in all of Us, was put together by Feld Entertainment and the Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream show that played at the Richmond Coliseum in September. The girls worked on creating their own tiaras, then enjoyed a visit with Princess Tiana and conversation and encouragement from local successful women. }

Cure by Design celebrates cancer survivors

Among the surprise celebrity appearances at the Sept. 24 Cure by Design Fashion Show was one by top male model Brad Kroenig (pictured with Sydney Page and First Lady of Virginia Maureen McDonnell, the honorary chair for the event).

Governor Bob McDonnell also dropped in to join his wife at the gala, which was held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa in Short Pump, while national designer Alex Garfield drummed up bids for the live auction.

The event centered around a fashion show featuring nearly 50 local cancer survivors as models. Following the fashion show, the traditional champagne toast and birthday reception was held to honor survivors, who posed with family and friends and celebrated “A World with Less Cancer and More Birthdays.”}
