Henrico school, businesses, organizations earn Active RVA awards

Active RVA hosted the fourth-annual RVA Awards May 17, recognizing organizations throughout the Richmond area that create a culture of daily physical activity and encourage active lifestyle.

During the event, Active RVA announced that it had given the Richmond region a grade of B- on its fitness scorecard.

The HHHunt Rivermill Project received the Active RVA Development Certification. Organizations were evaluated along five fundamental areas: space, connectivity, signage, amenities, and buildings. Active RVA presented its Infrastructure Award to the T. Tyler Potterfield Memorial Bridge, which recognizes a project with a positive impact on the active infrastructure of the region.

Active RVA, a program of Sports Backers, has announced the addition of a development certification to the Active RVA Awards.

The Active RVA Certification and Awards program highlights and recognizes organizations throughout the Richmond region that create a culture of daily physical activity and encourage active lifestyles. Certifications for cevelopment and early childhood education are new in 2017, and they join workplaces and schools as areas that can be Active RVA-certified for supporting physical activity.

Anthem LemonAid opens registration for July 14-16


Registration for Anthem LemonAid is now open, and Richmond-area families, businesses and community organizations can look forward to joining together this summer to support local kids with cancer.

It’s free to participate and supplies are provided; just register to set up a lemonade stand the weekend of July 14-16. Every registered participant will receive lemonade mix, cups, a pitcher, a banner, stickers and sunglasses.

YMCA branches to host ‘Healthy Kids Day’ Apr. 29-30


The YMCA of Greater Richmond will host its "Healthy Kids Day" April 29-30 at all local branches.

The event is part of the Y's national initiative to improve families' health and well-being.

Each event features games, healthy snacks, arts and crafts and physical activities, among other events. Its goal is to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.

Henrico PAL honors supporters


On Feb. 4, the Henrico Police Athletic League (PAL) celebrated its accomplishments and outstanding contributors at its seventh annual awards banquet at The Cultural Arts Center of Glen Allen. Among the award winners for 2015 were Yolanda Lee, Employee of the Year; Delana Russell, Youth of the Year; Pete Seipert, Police Officer of the Year; and Patty Kruszewski, Board Member of the Year (Kruszewski is the managing editor of the Citizen).

Representatives from Henrico County Public Schools Pupil Transportation and Henrico County Public Schools Nutrition Services were also recognized for their contributions to 2015 PAL Summer Camp.

Walking MADD


Mothers Against Drunk Driving will present its annual Walk Like MADD 5k Dash/Walk on Apr. 16 at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road. Check-in starts at 8 a.m. with the walk beginning at 9 a.m. Walk Like MADD honors those killed or injured in impaired driving crashes. Funds raised support victim services and educational events in Virginia.

Henrico to host focus group for seniors

Henrico County wants to hear from citizens 60 years of age and older. The county will host a focus group Apr. 19 to identify concerns, problems and needs of seniors in local neighborhoods; establish program priorities; and help identify local resources to enhance or expand senior programs.

The focus group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Henrico County Training Center, 7701 East Parham Road. It is open to Henrico residents only.

FamFest planned for April 9


Henrico's Division of Recreation & Parks will host FamFest from 1 p.m. 4 p.m. Saturday, April 9 at Deep Run Park.

The family event will begin with a giant ball drop and will feature colossal obstacle courses and mega-moon bounces as well as family "minute to win it" games and friendly competitions. Watch as the nationally-renowned Air Elite Dunkers leap their way into spring in the gym or get your groove on with music from Trademark or the dance troupe Future Shock.
