County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers.

Short Pump Park grand opening planned June 25

The grand opening of the new Short Pump Park will take place on Saturday, June 25, from 1-4 p.m. A dedication ceremony will be held at 1 p.m.

The new park has been 10 years in the making and will feature a water play-area with spray fountains and an off-leash dog park. In addition, the new park is 75 percent wooded and includes a walking trail.

Regency Square Farmers Market opens


Regency Square shopping center this week opened a farmers market that will operate weekly on the site. The center joined with Grow RVA to bring the first-ever such market to the facility.

The market will be held Mondays through Aug. 29 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., weather permitting, in the parking lot on the Quioccasin Road side of the center.

Approximately, 15-20 vendors will sell a mixture of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, fresh eggs, baked and canned goods.

The Pemberton at University Park to host ‘Wall of Honor’ ceremony June 9


The Pemberton at University Park senior community will host a dedication ceremony for its Veterans Wall of Honor June 9 at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will honor residents who have served in the military.

Deep Run High School Cadets will provide a color guard for the event.

Community members have taken photos of residents in uniform, as well as residents with pictures of their military units from their days of service that will be on display the day of the event.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center.

Every week, another child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia. Last summer, six-year-old Caroline Morris was one of them.

Diagnosed in June 2015 with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common type of childhood cancer, Morris has been receiving treatment at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU (CHoR) ever since.

“It’s not my hair that makes my beauty,” said Morris, who lost her hair as a chemotherapy side effect, “it’s my heart.”
