Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public

Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown.

Jacob’s Chance hosting online art auction


Nonprofit organization Jacob’s Chance, in cooperation with its sponsor Movement Mortgage, is hosting an online auction of original artwork created by its players and volunteers. The auction includes nearly 30 unique art pieces focused on an iconic “LOVE” theme.

The auction is live on Jacob’s Chance’s River City Buddy Ball Facebook page and will continue until Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

All proceeds from the auction will go to Jacob's Chance and its River City Buddyball program.

Western Henrico Rotary Club makes Thanksgiving donation to Coal Pit families


Members of the Western Henrico Rotary Club (WHRC) celebrated Thanksgiving a few days early on Nov. 23, making their annual donation of turkey dinners to 28 Coal Pit Learning Center families.

Among the WHRC members who visited Coal Pit for the giveway were Clint Ray and Lila Marcela Waggoner, pictured with 3-year-old Emily and 4-year-old Jaeda.

‘Caring Santa’ to visit special-needs children at VCC


'Caring Santa' will visit with children with special needs, and their families, at Virginia Center Commons shopping center in Glen Allen Sunday, Dec. 6, from 8:30 am. to 10:30 a.m. The visit will be held in a sensory friendly environment, and families will not have to wait in line but will sign in and be called when it is their turn.

Caring Santa events have expanded from seven Simon malls in 2011 to more than 100 Simon malls. In 2013, Simon and The Noerr Programs were honored by Community Gatepath, earning a Community Impact Award for their efforts in pioneering Caring Santa.

Local puppy trainers raise canine helper for Virginia woman


A puppy-raising family from Glen Allen has been credited with helping Canine Companions for Independence provide an assistance dog for Madisyn Hess of McGaheysville, Virginia.

Canine Companions for Independence, a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities, recently matched Madisyn with Oxford, a two-year-old Labrador/golden retriever cross who has been trained to respond to more than 40 advanced commands. Oxford can turn light switches on and off, open and close doors and retrieve dropped objects. One of his most important jobs, however, is to provide constant companionship for Madisyn.

Pathfinders 4-H creates Thanksgiving feasts


On Nov. 23, members of the Pathfinders 4-H Club in Henrico County packed and delivered more than 60 overflowing boxes of Thanksgiving meals to area families in need. Pathfinders is a community service club for children ages 5-18. The club has been providing food in this manner each Thanksgiving week for more than 20 years. The children raise money by fundraising throughout the year and conduct food drives in their neighborhoods.

Varina Ruritans honor police, fire officials and community members


The Varina Ruritan Club celebrated its 80th anniversary with a banquet Nov. 10, during which it presented several annual awards, including Policeman of the Year – to Henrico Officer Aaron M. Lancaster (top) – and Firefighter of the Year – to Julian T. Lipscomb (second from top).

The club also received a plaque from the Henrico Division of Fire (third from top) expressing the division's appreciation for the club and its support of fire prevention programs.
