A Glen Allen woman recently began raising an assistance dog in-training for Canine Companions for Independence, a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children, adults and veterans with disabilities.

Guided tour of Malvern Hill planned as part of ‘History at Sunset’ series


A two-hour guided walk through of portions of Malvern Hill July 1 will kick off the Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site's “History at Sunset” series of evening guided walks and programs highlighting new park lands and lesser-known stories. The series will continue at four other local Civil War sites and Evergreen Cemetery at 7 p.m. each Saturday in July.

Every week, a child is diagnosed with cancer in Central Virginia. In June 2015, Caroline Morris was one of them. Since then, she has been undergoing treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common form of childhood cancer, at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.

Morris now only requires monthly visits to CHoR and is scheduled to be finished with her active treatment in August. Her blonde hair has grown back, after losing it as a side effect of chemotherapy, and her mom, Carla, is quick to express relief at the thought of getting “back to normal and not worrying so much.”

Henrico woman wins $10k home energy makeover contest

Princess Banks of Henrico is the winner of the Richmond Region Energy Alliance's $10,000 Richmond Home Energy Makeover Contest, officials announced Oct. 15. Banks and her husband, along with their nine-year-old daughter, will receive energy updates to their home by mid-November, including a new heating and cooling system, added insulation and duct sealing.

“The grand prize is going to a family who will see a vast improvement in their home’s energy performance,” said Bill Greenleaf, executive director of the Richmond Region Energy Alliance. “As we promised, this family won once and they will save forever.”

‘Step UP’ 5K to benefit Down Syndrome Association


The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond will hold its sixth-annual Step UP for Down Syndrome 5K and Family Festival Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at Short Pump Town Center. The annual fundraiser, which attracted more than 1,300 participants and raised more than $100,000 last year, features a 5K run/walk and a free family festival that celebrates the abilities and accomplishments of children, teens and adults with Down syndrome.

“This day is a celebration of all of the amazing individuals with Down syndrome in our community,” said Allison Wixted, executive director of DSAGR. “The funds and awareness we raise directly impact these individuals and their families throughout Central Virginia.”
