The threat of bad weather didn’t keep visitors away from Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden July 10 for the facility’s weekly Flowers After 5 event (which pairs music and food with a chance to stroll the garden) and its monthly Fidos After 5 (which allows dog owners to bring their pets with them to enjoy the evening).

‘More Than a GPA’ program at Godwin H.S. Jan. 18

The Godwin High School PTSA will present "More than a GPA," a program about the effort to redefine success for today's students and to make the case for character and integrity as important measures of one's potential, on Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at GHS.

Four speakers -- all featured in the book "A Better Man – True American Heroes Speak to Young Men on Love, Power, Pride and What It Really Means to Be a Man" -- will address the topic: Adam Cristman, Paul Galanti, Tim Seibles and Leighton W. Smith, Jr.}

VHBG receives donation

The Kinder Morgan Foundation recently donated $2,500 to the Virginia Home for Boys and Girls in Henrico. The money will fund the Vocational-Educational Partnership Program at the John G. Wood alternative school at the home, which is designed to fill the gap between classroom knowledge, job training and real life experiences that employers demand. }

Hoopsters with heart

Andrew Tilghman, age 9, was one of several family members of "Make-a-Wish kids" who got a special treat Dec. 2 at Dave & Buster’s Restaurant in West Broad Village, with the help of the Harlem Globetrotters and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Greater Virginia. Globetrotters Firefly Fisher (pictured above, with Andrew), Slick Willie Shaw, and the legendary Curly Neal hosted a pre-Christmas Parade party at which five children (including Andrew's sister) enjoyed food, drinks and free game cards with their families. }
