‘Secret Keeper Girl - Crazy Hair Tour’ returning to West End Assembly of God

Hundreds of 'tweens' and their moms will attend the Secret Keeper Girl Crazy Hair Tour at West End Assembly of God on Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m., a popular Bible-based tour geared toward building and strengthening relationships between mothers and their daughters (typically ages 8 to 12).

The event will feature a full fashion show, oversized balloon sculptures and confetti cannons – all in the name of inner beauty, Biblical modesty and vibrant purity.

‘Bassmaster’ competition continues at Osborne Park

The 2012 Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Northern Open started June 14 and runs through Saturday, June 16 out of Osborne Park and Boat Landing in Henrico. Enthusiasts are invited to watch the morning launches from Osborne Park, located at 9530 Osborne Tnpk. Take-off time is set for 6 a.m.

Modlin Center for the Arts announces 2012-13 season

The Modlin Center for the Arts at the University of Richmond will open the 2012-13 season on Thursday, Sept. 6 with a live broadcast of the National Theatre of London’s “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” This new production, based on the international best-selling novel by Mark Haddon and adapted for the stage by Simon Stephens, will be the first of a scheduled 84 events and 113 performances presented by ModlinArts, the Department of Theatre and Dance, and the Department of Music.}

Charity flag football game at Highland Springs HS

The Virginia State Police and the Virginia Hornets will face off again to help raise awareness and contributions to support Special Olympics Virginia. The flag football game will be held Saturday, June 16 at Highland Springs High School, 15 S. Oak Ave. Gates open at noon and the game starts at 1 p.m.

‘2012 Foundation’s Finest’ raises money for cystic fibrosis

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Virginia Chapter recently announced the 2012 Foundation’s Finest Class. Thirteen of Richmond’s finest young professionals have started a seven week fundraising blitz. Their goal is to raise $3,000 each through a combination of donations, ticket sales, auction donations, sponsorships, and planning special events around the community.

The Foundation’s Finest program is an event of the CF Young Professionals Leadership Council and guided by event co-chairs Jessica Chandler of Wardrobe Richmond and Amanda Weiner of Saxon Shoes. }

Fan Care Program for seniors begins Friday

Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging is again helping older adults combat summer heat by sponsoring the Fan Care Program. Through Fan Care, now in its 22nd year, older adults age 60 and over can receive a fan or other cooling assistance. They also must meet income eligibility requirements.

To apply, call the Fan Care Hotline at 343-3005 and leave a name, address and phone number. A Fan Care representative will return your call.

Fan Care is made possible by cooperative efforts of Dominion Virginia Power, the Virginia Department for the Aging and Senior Connections. The program will start June15 and ends on September 30, 2012. }

Athletes ‘go for the gold’ at Special Olympics Summer Games

More than 1,400 athletes from around the Commonwealth will go for the gold in powerlifting, swimming, track and field, softball, tennis and bowling this weekend June 8-9 during the 2012 Special Olympics Summer Games.

Summer Games competitions will be held at various locations around the region tomorrow, beginning at 9 a.m.: Softball – Glen Allen Softball Complex, 2175 Mountain Rd.; Powerlifting, track and field, wheelchair athletics, softball skills and tennis – University of Richmond; Swimming – St. Catherine’s School, 6001 Grove Ave.; and bowling – AMF Hanover Lanes, 7317 Bell Creek Rd. and Bowl America Short Pump, 4400 Pouncey Tract Rd.

New for 2012, a Young Athletes “Fun Run” will take place at 9:45 a.m. on the track at the University of Richmond. The 25M run is aimed at introducing athletes age 2-10 to Special Olympics.}
