Henricus ‘Hops’ event about more than beer


The crowds thronged roads and walkways leading to their destination. Some visitors pushed strollers; many brought multiple children; others came singly or in couples. But all shared the same singlemindedness and eagerness to achieve their goals.

No, it wasn't Black Friday.

These visitors came seeking history, family fun – and beer.

The second annual Hops In The Park Harvest Festival, held Nov. 12 at Henricus Historical Park, showcased Virginia craft beverages of all kinds and had representatives from 21 breweries, cideries and meaderies on hand, in addition to hops farmers from around the commonwealth. > Read more.

Henrico Police arrest, charge 18-year-old with murder


Henrico Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old county man with second-degree murder in the death of a 20-year-old Henrico man Dec. 4.

Leslie Jerome Tyler, Jr. is being held at the Henrico County Jail, charged in the stabbing death of Keonte Freeman Taylor at a hotel in the 5700 block of Williamsburg Road in Eastern Henrico. At about 1:25 a.m., Dec. 4, police and fire units responded to the hotel for reports of a stabbing. They found Taylor, who was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. > Read more.

McShin Foundation earns reaccreditation


The McShin Foundation, based in Henrico, recently earned three years of reaccreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services. McShin, founded in 2004, is a nonprofit recovery community organization that serves people and their families in the battle against substance use problems.

CAPRSS is the only accrediting body in the nation for RCOs. It evaluates organizations on four standards: principles, people, practices and performance. > Read more.

Henrico Police seek tips about Sandston murder

Henrico Police are seeking information from the public about a murder that occurred Dec. 2 in Sandston.

At about 2:30 a.m., police responded to the 5200 block of Lewis Road (just behind the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad near Richmond International Airport) after reports of a shooting. Officers located 21-year-old Jarrelle James Pringle, of Richmond, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives continue to investigate the incident. > Read more.

Virginia529 prepaid tuition enrollment program opens


The enrollment period for the Virginia529 prePAID college tuition program is now open through March 31.

For 2016-2017, tuition and mandatory fees at a Virginia public university can cost as much as $21,234. The Virginia529 plan is designed to help families eliminate the uncertainty of future increases at those institutions. > Read more.

Richmond SCORE announces 2017 entrepreneurship competition


Richmond SCORE, in partnership with the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, will launch its second Business Model Canvas Competition Jan. 1.

The nonprofit volunteer mentoring organization is inviting all Richmond-area entrepreneurs and start-ups (new businesses up to one year old and that haven't won money or tangibles in a business competition in the same time frame) to apply as contestants. Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.
