Glen Allen residents to appear on ‘Great Christmas Light Fight’ Monday on ABC


Al and Esther Thompson's Glen Allen home will be featured on the ABC's "The Great Christmas Light Fight" Monday at 9 p.m. The couple's home is decorated for the holidays with more than 170,000 lights and hundreds of homemade items.

The couple's house, at 9716 Wendhurst Drive, is one of several that will compete on the show for a $50,000 prize. The show was taped in October. > Read more.

OneJet to begin nonstop service between RIC and Pittsburgh


OneJet will introduce nonstop service between Richmond International Airport and Pittsburgh Mar. 1, the company announced this week.

OneJet provides nonstop travel between its base in Pittsburgh and small and medium-size markets, such as Hartford, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Louisville and Cincinnati. It is also adding service to Albany, N.Y. in March.

Sensitive Santa to visit Regency Square


Regency Square will host Sensitive Santa Dec. 11 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event gives children on the autism spectrum an opportunity to meet and have their photo taken with Santa this Christmas during the first Sensitive Santa event. Families can experience Santa without the common hustle and bustle and sensory overload.

Families also may book during certain times, easing the experience of standing in long lines. Children can be photographed with Santa in an autism-friendly setting. > Read more.

Henricus ‘Hops’ event about more than beer


The crowds thronged roads and walkways leading to their destination. Some visitors pushed strollers; many brought multiple children; others came singly or in couples. But all shared the same singlemindedness and eagerness to achieve their goals.

No, it wasn't Black Friday.

These visitors came seeking history, family fun – and beer.

The second annual Hops In The Park Harvest Festival, held Nov. 12 at Henricus Historical Park, showcased Virginia craft beverages of all kinds and had representatives from 21 breweries, cideries and meaderies on hand, in addition to hops farmers from around the commonwealth. > Read more.

Henrico Police arrest, charge 18-year-old with murder


Henrico Police arrested and charged an 18-year-old county man with second-degree murder in the death of a 20-year-old Henrico man Dec. 4.

Leslie Jerome Tyler, Jr. is being held at the Henrico County Jail, charged in the stabbing death of Keonte Freeman Taylor at a hotel in the 5700 block of Williamsburg Road in Eastern Henrico. At about 1:25 a.m., Dec. 4, police and fire units responded to the hotel for reports of a stabbing. They found Taylor, who was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. > Read more.

McShin Foundation earns reaccreditation


The McShin Foundation, based in Henrico, recently earned three years of reaccreditation from the Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services. McShin, founded in 2004, is a nonprofit recovery community organization that serves people and their families in the battle against substance use problems.

CAPRSS is the only accrediting body in the nation for RCOs. It evaluates organizations on four standards: principles, people, practices and performance. > Read more.

Villa’s Flagler Housing wins national NAEH award


St. Joseph's Villa’s Flagler Housing & Homeless Services was one of three entities to earn the National Alliance to End Homelessness' Champion of Change Award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 during a ceremony at the Newseum in Washington, D.C.

NAEH annually recognizes proven programs and significant achievements in ending child and family homelessness.

Flagler completed its transition from an on-campus shelter to the community-based model of rapid rehousing in 2013, and it was one of the nation's first rapid re-housing service providers to be certified by NAEH. > Read more.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.
