‘Walk to End Alzheimer’s’ raises more than $340,000


The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter's annual Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s Oct. 18 in Innsbrook raised more than $340,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support programs and research. More than 1,600 participants took part in the event.

The Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s was one of four Walks for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Richmond held since Sept. 20; combined, the four raised more than $530,000.

Susan Hudson, the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond’s 2014 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Chair, has been a Walk participant for eleven years. > Read more.

Firefighters extinguish warehouse fire near RIR

UPDATE: AUG. 18, 10:15 A.M. – Henrico firefighters extinguished a small fire at a warehouse near Richmond International Raceway early this morning.

The fire alarm sounded at 1:16 a.m. at the warehouse, at 4201 Carolina Avenue, just about a mile from Fire Station No. 1 on East Azalea Avenue. Units that responded reported light smoke coming from the warehouse and found a small fire under a conveyor belt when they entered. They were able to extinguish it by 1:38 a.m. > Read more.

Henrico man named national commander, CEO of Civil Air Patrol

A Henrico man has been sworn in as the new national commander and CEO of the Civil Air Patrol.

Maj. Gen. Joe Vazquez of Henrico was sworn in Aug. 15 at the organization's 2014 national conference.

“It will be my privilege to lead the team of national staff, wing and region commanders who make CAP simply the best nonprofit corporation in the country today,” said Vazquez, minutes after taking the guidon as national commander. > Read more.

Babe Ruth World Series arrives in Henrico

13-year-olds begin tournament play Saturday
Brookland District Supervisor Dick Glover gives the opening address during opening ceremonies for the Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series Friday, Aug. 15 at Glen Allen Stadium at RF&P Park, while the host team from Glen Allen looks on.


The 10-team tournament began today and will continue throughout the week. Teams will play four games in pool play before beginning the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Glen Allen plays:

ChildFund’s influence spreads globally


In 1938, a Presbyterian minister from Richmond, Dr. J. Calvitt Clarke, created a campaign to help Chinese children orphaned during the Second Sino-Japanese war. He connected donors on a one-to-one basis with children through “adoptions.”

Today, his model has grown into an international organization – ChildFund International – that serves 18.1 million people in 30 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.

Acting on its growing understanding of what works for children, ChildFund moved from running orphanages to helping families and communities fight poverty at its roots. > Read more.

Hat trick for Henrico man

At the annual meeting of the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts (VASWCD), held Dec. 4 in Roanoke, Henrico resident Donald O. “Spec” Campen (at right in photo, with grandson Kristopher Burnette) was honored with the 2012 E.C. Compton Meritorious Achievement Award. A former chairman of the Henricopolis Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) in Henrico County, Campen has been involved with the Soil and Water Conservation Districts for 34 years. He has also served as AREA III Chairman of the VASWCD, been a member of the state association’s legislative committee for 24 years, and headed committees involved with Chesapeake Bay corrective efforts. > Read more.

Varina native and Super Bowl champion Michael Robinson will appear on an episode of CBS’s “The Young and the Restless” that will air March 13 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
