Malvern Hill listed for sale


Malvern Hill Farm, a 900-plus-acre homestead in Varina that has been owned by the same family for several generations, has been listed for sale. Commonwealth Commercial Partners, LLC will handle the sale of the property, located north of New Market Road and west of Carters Mill Road. The asking price is $10.6 million.

About one-third of the historic property is actively farmed and the rest is wooded. Acquired by William Ferguson in the 1930s, today the farm is owned by multiple generations of the same family. Malvern Hill Hunt Club has been caring for the farm for decades. > Read more.

Henrico native serves as Governor’s Fellow


Henrico native Saman Aghaebrahim recently completed a two-month internship as a Governor's Fellow in the office of Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

Aghaebrahim, pictured above with McAuliffe and First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe, was part of a select group of rising college seniors, graduating seniors and graduate students selected for the internship, which places participants in various positions in the Governor's Office and in agencies throughout the Executive Branch. The program attempts to match Fellows with compatible assignments, based upon their backgrounds, interests and future goals. > Read more.

Henrico man killed in Parham Road crash

A 58-year-old Henrico man died in a single-car accident on East Parham Road Aug. 28.

Tony Lee MCGill was traveling westbound on the road shortly after 6 p.m. in a Chevrolet pick-up truck, approaching the intersection of Aberdeen Street, when his truck ran off the right side of the road and struck a traffic signal support pole. McGill died at the scene. > Read more.

Henrico Public Schools wins two ‘Creating Excellence’ awards from VDOE


The Henrico County Public Schools system earned two statewide honors this week at the Creating Excellence Awards Program, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Community College System and held June 9 in Richmond.

The HCPS sports medicine program won the Region One Program award, and the Computer Systems Technology Advisory Committee won the region's Advisory Committee award. > Read more.

Henrico resident inducted into DLA Aviation Hall of Fame


Defense Logistics Agency Aviation inducted its 34th Hall of Fame recipient, Glen Allen resident Mary Studevant, during its 2016 awards ceremony June 16 at the Frank B. Lotts Conference Center in Richmond.

Studevant held numerous civilian supervisory and non-supervisory positions within the group for more than 30 years. She began in 1966 as a secretary and continued for more than 17 years in the acquisition field.

“Studevant’s transformative leadership style led to improvements throughout DSCR and DLA Headquarters recognizing DLA Aviation as the Center of Excellence for Executive Level Conferences,” said Air Force Brig. Gen. Allan Day. > Read more.

‘Spirit of Becky’ lives on

Scholarship fund has donated $164,200

Howard W. “Bud” Minor, Jr. had just assumed the presidency of the Western Henrico Rotary Club in 1990 when he got the call one July evening from fellow Rotarian Cordell Briggs.

Seventeen-year-old Becky Briggs, Cordell's daughter, had been killed in an auto accident that afternoon on Interstate 95 near Emporia.

At Briggs' request, Minor went to identify the body. His long-time friend said he just was not up to the task. > Read more.

Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year.
