CVWMA to begin accepting more varieties of bottles, containers, cartons


If you've always wanted to recycle yogurt containers, waxy cartons and laundry detergent bottles, you're in luck. The Central Virginia Waste Management Authority will begin accepting a number of new items for curbside and drop-off recycling July 1.

Recyclers throughout the CVWMA service area have been asking for years to be able to recycle more than the #1 and #2 narrow neck plastic bottles currently accepted in its recycling programs, and those wishes will become reality later this week. Plastic bottles and containers with the numbers 1-7 on the bottom, as well as waxy cartons, will be accepted in both programs. > Read more.

Virginia man arrested with gun at RIC checkpoint


Richmond International Airport Police arrested a Newport News man on state weapons charges after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the airport checkpoint June 27 when TSA officers detected a .38 caliber handgun with five bullets tucked inside his backpack.

The traveler told TSA officials that he had the gun in his carry-on bag because he had guests with children visiting him this past weekend. He told officials that he did not want the children to have access to the gun, so he hid it inside his backpack. > Read more.

Community celebrates opening of Short Pump Park

Splash pool, dog park among featured amenities

The wait is over for eager kids (and dogs) looking to enjoy the new Short Pump Park.

Henrico Recreation and Parks officials cut the ribbon June 25 on a park that has been 18 years in the making. The property, on Pump Road adjacent to Three Chopt Road, includes a large playground, a splash area with spray fountains and a one-acre dog park.

The grand opening was well attended, with hundreds of locals gathering to take part in the festivities. Many of those who helped make the park a reality attended the dedication ceremony. > Read more.

Now in its sixth year, the achievement celebrates hospitality businesses that have earned great traveler reviews on the online TripAdvisor site over the past year. Henrico Public Schools wins two ‘Creating Excellence’ awards from VDOE


The Henrico County Public Schools system earned two statewide honors this week at the Creating Excellence Awards Program, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Virginia Community College System and held June 9 in Richmond.

The HCPS sports medicine program won the Region One Program award, and the Computer Systems Technology Advisory Committee won the region's Advisory Committee award. > Read more.

Henrico resident inducted into DLA Aviation Hall of Fame


Defense Logistics Agency Aviation inducted its 34th Hall of Fame recipient, Glen Allen resident Mary Studevant, during its 2016 awards ceremony June 16 at the Frank B. Lotts Conference Center in Richmond.

Studevant held numerous civilian supervisory and non-supervisory positions within the group for more than 30 years. She began in 1966 as a secretary and continued for more than 17 years in the acquisition field.

“Studevant’s transformative leadership style led to improvements throughout DSCR and DLA Headquarters recognizing DLA Aviation as the Center of Excellence for Executive Level Conferences,” said Air Force Brig. Gen. Allan Day. > Read more.

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
