The Henrico County Police Division’s Special Enforcement Unit recently won first place in its categories at the Law Enforcement Challenge (LEC) in both the statewide and national competitions. The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police (VACP) hold this competition each year to recognize agencies having the best traffic safety programs in the commonwealth and in the nation.
In the statewide VACP LEC competition, Municipal Category 8 is composed of law enforcement agencies with between 451-700 officers. In the IACP LEC competition, the category in which Henrico officers competed is composed of agencies with 251 or more police officers. > Read more.

UPDATE: AUG. 18, 10:15 A.M. – Henrico firefighters extinguished a small fire at a warehouse near Richmond International Raceway early this morning.
The fire alarm sounded at 1:16 a.m. at the warehouse, at 4201 Carolina Avenue, just about a mile from Fire Station No. 1 on East Azalea Avenue. Units that responded reported light smoke coming from the warehouse and found a small fire under a conveyor belt when they entered. They were able to extinguish it by 1:38 a.m. > Read more.

A Henrico man has been sworn in as the new national commander and CEO of the Civil Air Patrol.
Maj. Gen. Joe Vazquez of Henrico was sworn in Aug. 15 at the organization's 2014 national conference.
“It will be my privilege to lead the team of national staff, wing and region commanders who make CAP simply the best nonprofit corporation in the country today,” said Vazquez, minutes after taking the guidon as national commander. > Read more.

In 1938, a Presbyterian minister from Richmond, Dr. J. Calvitt Clarke, created a campaign to help Chinese children orphaned during the Second Sino-Japanese war. He connected donors on a one-to-one basis with children through “adoptions.”
Today, his model has grown into an international organization – ChildFund International – that serves 18.1 million people in 30 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.
Acting on its growing understanding of what works for children, ChildFund moved from running orphanages to helping families and communities fight poverty at its roots. > Read more.

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s admission has increased by $1 across all categories. Admission is now $12 for adults; $11 for seniors ages 55 and older; and $8 for children ages 3–12. Admission remains free for children ages 3 and younger and for members.

Thanks in part to a $10,000 gift from the Western Henrico Rotary Club, another bright pink Jeep modified to travel extremely rough terrain has been delivered to Midwives For Haiti so that more pregnant women in the quake-ravaged country will have access to prenatal care and a greater chance of surviving childbirth.
The funds were raised at the annual casino night held in February, club president Adam Cherry said. The Rotary Club also helped purchase the Virginia-based charity’s first pink jeep three years ago. > Read more.
The Joshua Plant, which made its world premiere at CAT Theatre in January, took top honors at CAT’s 2014 Tabby Awards, held July 20. Written by Amy Berlin and P. Ann Bucci, The Joshua Plant was the winner of CAT's 50th Anniversary Original Play contest and was chosen from dozens of entries. The Joshua Plant began as a 10-minute play that was a finalist in the 2005 Chicago Dramatist Fall Ten Minute Workshop. Since then, it has had three developmental readings with Phoenix Theatre and a staged reading at the Pandora Festival, as well as a reading at the Richmond Public Library as part of the Richmond Writer's series. > Read more.
A finalist in the Bravo television show Top Chef is bringing one of his four restaurant chains to Henrico County.
Bryan Voltaggio, who was the runner-up of the sixth season of Top Chef, (finishing second to his brother, Michael) and his business partner, Hilda Staples, will open their third Family Meal restaurant, at Henrico's Willow Lawn shopping center. The United States Army Field Band will present a free public performance at Deep Run Park in Henrico on Sunday, Aug 3 at 3 p.m.
Members of the band are soldiers who also serve as “musical ambassadors of the Army” and perform for schools and communities nationwide.
