Community celebrates opening of Short Pump Park

Splash pool, dog park among featured amenities

The wait is over for eager kids (and dogs) looking to enjoy the new Short Pump Park.

Henrico Recreation and Parks officials cut the ribbon June 25 on a park that has been 18 years in the making. The property, on Pump Road adjacent to Three Chopt Road, includes a large playground, a splash area with spray fountains and a one-acre dog park.

The grand opening was well attended, with hundreds of locals gathering to take part in the festivities. Many of those who helped make the park a reality attended the dedication ceremony. > Read more.

Henrico Police seek woman involved in suspicious situation

The Henrico Division of Police is seeking the public's help to identify a woman who tried to enter a secure part of a building in the Near West End last week.

The woman tried to access the secure area in the 1600 block of Forest Avenue June 22. She was denied by staff members at the location.

The suspect is described as a black female with a medium complexion, weighing between 120 and 130 pounds, with short hair and glasses. She is pictured above. > Read more.

Flying Squirrels, Sciencetellers kick of summer reading programs at Henrico libraries


The Henrico County Public Library system's Summer Reading Club begins this week with opportunities to meet members of the Richmond Flying Squirrels and receive free tickets to games. The club also features a focus on science through the Sciencetellers stories.

Children and teens can enjoy some baseball stories and take part in baseball crafts and activities while getting the chance to meet either Nutzy or Flying Squirrels players (depending upon availability) on the following dates and locations:

SR-71 moving from Virginia Aviation Museum


One of the most visible exhibits at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston is on its way to a new home.

The world’s fastest and highest flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird, is preparing to move from the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia. The iconic, supersonic stealth plane will become the focal point of the SMVs new exhibition gallery, Speed, opening later this year.

Before traveling to its new home, the Blackbird will be disassembled and packaged by experts from Worldwide Aircraft Recovery and W.M. Jordan Company. > Read more.

HCPS hiring, training school bus drivers


Henrico Schools is hiring bus drivers. If you’re a good candidate but lack experience, don’t worry: HCPS may pay you while you learn.

Interested applicants can learn more at a school transportation job fair Friday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Glen Allen Branch Library, 10501 Staples Mill Road. Attendees can check out buses, chat with bus drivers, enjoy refreshments and be interviewed for a bus driver position.

Members of the HCPS Human Resources and Pupil Transportation departments will be at event, and HCPS representatives will conduct preliminary interviews with interested bus driver candidates > Read more.

Car crashes into grocery store


FEB. 4, 6:45 P.M. – A car crashed into the entrance of the Good Foods Grocery Store in western Henrico shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday.

Henrico County Division of Fire units responded to the store, 1312 Gaskins Road, at 2:01 p.m. and found that the vehicle had taken out one of the brick columns at the entrance to the store. One adult female was in the vehicle at the time of the incident, and she was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The Henrico County Building inspector was called to evaluate the building. No other injuries were reported. > Read more.

County plans Fourth of July event


Henrico County Recreation and Parks will present “Red, White, and Lights” at Meadow Farm Museum/Crump Park July 4.

Henrico County has hosted a Fourth of July celebration annually since 1981, but this year’s event will offer a later start time and expanded hours and be highlighted by new entertainment.

The free event will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will feature the Richmond Symphony, a laser-light show, patriotic performances, and family activities. > Read more.

Tuckahoe YMCA to host Refugee Community Resource Fair


The Tuckahoe Family YMCA and ReEstablish Richmond will host the third-annual Refugee Community Resource Fair Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at the YMCA, 9211 Patterson Avenue in Henrico. The event is designed to provide refugees in the region information about jobs, local businesses, housing, health care, education and more.

As part of its strategic plan, the YMCA of Greater Richmond works to identify, address and eliminate economic, geographic and cultural barriers. > Read more.

Muse Paintbar opens at Willow Lawn


Muse Paintbar, which combines painting instruction with a wine bar and restaurant, opened June 23 at The Shops at Willow Lawn in Henrico. The location is the company's 17th nationwide.

Guests can learn from local artists while sampling a wide selection of wine, beer and tapas. The facility held a soft-launch last weekend, allowing patrons a sneak peek at the studio’s artistic offerings.
