Country Style Donuts to open West End location

The “King of the Doughnuts” is expanding his territory. Zouhair Nasserddine, owner of Country Style Donuts in Eastern Henrico, has announced the opening of a new store in the Gold’s Gym Plaza at West Tower, 8900 W. Broad Street.

Nasserddine, a native of Lebanon, earned the regal nickname while working for Dunkin’ Donuts in the 1970s.

“The owner saw him making doughnuts one day and called him the King of the Doughnuts,” said Nasserddine’s wife, Waswa. She says that the owner declared, “We can’t ever let this guy go!’” > Read more.

Pow Wow celebrates American Indians

Richmond American Indian Pow Wow, held Nov. 15-17 at the Richmond Raceway Complex in Henrico, featured art, culture, dance, exhibits, festivals, music and history showcasing Native Americans in Virginia. Among those honored at the event was 80-year-old Pat Richardson, pictured at right with her son, Wayahsti Richardson. The elder Richardson has supported her tribal family, culture and young dancers for decades. > Read more.

Paint power

Volunteers with Henrico County's "Operation Paintbrush" painted the home of Terri Sheppard on Westbourne Drive earlier this month as part of the program, which offers its services to homeowners who need meet certain criteria. Library seeks book donations for Christmas Mother

The Henrico County Library system is seeking book donations to provide to the Henrico Christmas Mother, whose season starts Dec. 4.

All Henrico libraries have donation boxes, where visitors can donate new or gently used children’s and teen books. All books that are in good shape will be accepted. The Henrico Christmas Mother Program relies on hundreds of volunteers and thousands of donors to provide new clothes, toys, books and food to more than 6,000 Henrico County residents who need assistance during the holiday season, including low-income families, adults with disabilities and the elderly. > Read more.

Cantor honors Seventh District veterans

U.S. Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-7) presented 11 veterans from Virginia’s Seventh District – including one from Henrico – with the 2013 Congressional Veteran Commendation during a ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial in Richmond Nov. 18.

"Each year the Congressional Veteran Commendation gives us an opportunity to honor the veterans in our community and preserve their stories," Cantor said after the event. "Today, I had the privilege of presenting eleven distinguished veterans from the Seventh District of Virginia with the Congressional Veteran Commendation. Each of these heroes selflessly served their neighbors and their nation. We are forever indebted to all our soldiers and their families for the sacrifices they made to defend our freedoms." > Read more.

Milestones

Navy Midshipman Peyton B. Walsh, son of Mary O. and Patrick B. Walsh of Glen Allen, recently completed Plebe Summer while attending the U.S. Naval Academy. Plebe Summer is the summer training program required of all incoming freshmen to the naval academy. Walsh will go on to complete the academic year as a midshipman. He is a 2010 graduate of Deep Run High School. > Read more.

Dorey Dog Park to open Oct. 15

Henrico County's first county-built dog park will open Saturday, Oct. 15 at Dorey Park, 2999 Darbytown Road in Varina. A grand opening and dedication ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. The one-acre park will feature sections for large and small dogs, exercise play equipment, water fountain and spray water features. The first 200 dogs Oct. 15 will receive a giveaway, and attendees can take their dog's photo with Snoopy and Sparky the Fire Dog.

Art walking, without the chill

Crossroads Art Center to host indoor event Jan. 21
We really do love downtown Richmond’s First Fridays Art Walk. It’s a great way to view works of myriad artists in a concentrated area, meet a lot of local characters and just revel in the general spectacle of it all.

At this time of year, however, we prefer our activities a bit more sheltered from the elements. But we don’t have to give up our Art Walk – we’re just moving indoors. > Read more.
