‘Walk to End Alzheimer’s’ raises more than $340,000


The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Richmond Chapter's annual Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s Oct. 18 in Innsbrook raised more than $340,000 for Alzheimer’s care, support programs and research. More than 1,600 participants took part in the event.

The Richmond Walk to End Alzheimer’s was one of four Walks for the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Richmond held since Sept. 20; combined, the four raised more than $530,000.

FeedMore honors Henrico volunteers


FeedMore recognized several volunteers from Henrico County recently in honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week. The volunteers - William Cary, Phil Newton and Yvette Gilmore – have given eight total years of service to the agency, which works to fight hunger in Central Virginia.

“It’s heartbreaking to realize there are kids in our community who are hungry,” said Cary (pictured, at right), a volunteer with FeedMore’s Children’s Programs. “Nobody, young or old, should be hungry.” > Read more.

The Friends of Chesterfield’s Riverfront (FoCR) has merged with Capital Region Land Conservancy (CRLC), which will carry on the work of both organizations by stewarding the lands previously protected by FoCR. Initial discussions about a merger began in late 2013. Legal due diligence was conducted in early 2014 and the merger decision was formally made in late March 2014. Troutman Sanders LLP provided pro bono legal services for due diligence and document preparation for the merger. As part of the merger, conservation easements held by FoCR will be assigned to CRLC. The restrictions, land use limitations, and reserved rights listed in each easement will remain unchanged. > Read more.

Henrico couple wins $4M Va. Lottery prize

Henrico residents David Diggs and Rosalyn Radden worked as a team to win the $4 million top prize in the Virginia Lottery’s $100 Million Cash Extravaganza game. She bought the ticket, he scratched it, and when they realized it was a big winner, they high-fived.

They bought the winning ticket at Martin’s, 2250 John Rolfe Parkway in Henrico. Radden had decided a few weeks earlier that she would buy one ticket in that game each week. This was the fourth week.

After dinner at home, when Diggs scratched the ticket, he said, “I think I have something.” > Read more.

Riggs named Henrico Community Leader of the Year

The Henrico Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber recently named Tricia Riggs, director of the USO Center at Richmond International Airport, as the 2014 Henrico Community Leader of the Year.

Riggs became director of the center in December 2010 – the same year it opened – just in time for “Exodus,” an annual period when several thousand troops come through RIC after being granted a leave period from training for the holidays. Her work has not stopped since and has only expanded to establish the USO Center at RIC as the go-to resource for invaluable services for military families in Henrico County and Greater Richmond. > Read more.

Capping the season in tune

The "Knitters of Cedarfield" made their annual donation of knitted caps to the Henrico Christmas Mother Dec. 5 at The Hermitage at Cedarfield, presenting 110 caps to be used by needy families.

The gift presentation was followed by a program of holiday music, performed by members of the Greater Richmond Chorus, who chose Cedarfield resident Russell Johnston as the impromptu subject of their affections during a "Santa Baby" number. > Read more.

Donations needed for ‘Saxon Shoes for the Needy’ program

Over the next two weeks Saxon Shoes will wrap up their 2012 Saxon Shoes for the Needy program. Donated shoes will benefit deserving area families through the programs of The Salvation Army ARC, 2601 Hermitage Rd. Salvation Army’s Christmas Center opens at VCC Dec. 13

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Salvation Army of Central Virginia will begin the distribution of toys, clothing, coats, bikes, books and other items to those in need this holiday season. The Salvation Army’s Christmas Center is located at Virginia Center Commons in the former Dillard’s, 10101 Brook Rd. A ceremonial ribbon cutting will take place at 8:30 a.m. to mark the Christmas Center’s grand opening. > Read more.
