Kaechele named Community Leader of the Year

The Henrico Business Council of the Greater Richmond Chamber recently named Three Chopt District Supervisor Dave Kaechele as its 2015 Henrico Community Leader of the Year. The annual award honors a Henrico citizen who has made a positive difference in the community and demonstrates support, dedication and enthusiasm for the betterment and growth of the county.

Kaechele has served Henrico County and the Richmond region in elected office for almost 36 years. He will retire from his position at the end of the year. Even before holding elected office, Kaechele was active in the community. While working as an engineer for Reynolds Metals Company, he was involved with the Boy Scouts, Jaycees, Parent Teacher Association, Booster's Club and his church, where he is still a member, deacon and elder. > Read more.

Assembly rejects McAuliffe’s drone recommendations


The General Assembly has rejected Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s recommendation to give police a freer rein in using unmanned aircraft.

Both the House and Senate rejected changes that the Democratic governor proposed to legislation regarding when law enforcement agencies must get a warrant to use a drone. McAuliffe’s amendments drew opposition from members of both parties.

SB 1301, introduced by Sen. Donald McEachin, D-Richmond, and HB 2125, sponsored by Del. Ben Cline, R-Rockbridge, originally said that government agencies would need a search warrant to use drones for “law enforcement” activities. > Read more.

Ogburn defeats Dhakar for Three Chopt School Board seat

UPDATE: 9:30 P.M. – Former Henrico County teacher Micky Ogburn has won a special election to serve the final year of a four-year School Board term representing the Three Chopt District, easily defeating Surya Dhakar tonight, 62 percent to 36 percent.

Ogburn coasted to victory, receiving 11,505 votes to Dhakar’s 6,745. She won all 15 physical precincts and the absentee precinct, achieving more than 61 percent of the vote in all but four of them. > Read more.

Goshorn named Christmas Mother

The Henrico Christmas Mother Council has announced that Rebecca "Becky" M. Goshorn, a retired math teacher from Henrico County Public Schools, has been chosen as the 2014 Henrico Christmas Mother.

A Norfolk native and a resident of Henrico County for 38 years, Goshorn began teaching mathematics and computer science at Hermitage High School in 1977 and retired in 2000.

She is currently a mathematics education consultant, an adjunct mathematics teacher at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, and an adjunct university supervisor for mathematics graduate Interns at Virginia Commonwealth University. > Read more.

Quidditch invades Dorey Park

Twenty college quidditch teams totaling more than 400 players participated in the U.S. Quidditch Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship Nov. 1-2 at Varina's Dorey Park. A team from the University of Maryland won the tournament, while VCU's entry (pictured above) won the consolation bracket to qualify for the world championships. The game is inspired by one played by characters in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. > Read more.

12 new CASA volunteers sworn in

Twelve new Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs) were sworn in by Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Chief Judge Rondelle D. Herman Oct. 8.

Herman told the new volunteers she depends on CASA to provide her the necessary information that helps in making the critical decisions in the lives of children. Appointed by the presiding judge, a CASA gathers information to supplement what is already provided to the court to help portray a more complete picture of each child’s circumstances. > Read more.

Advance registration ends March 7 for ‘Free to Breathe’ 5K in Innsbrook

The second annual Free to Breathe® 5K Run/Walk will take place in the Innsbrook Corporate Center on Saturday, March 10. All proceeds help support the National Lung Cancer Partnership’s vital research, education and awareness programs.

Mail-in registration ends March 5; fees are $13 to $33. Online registration ends March 7; fees are $10 to $30. Registration the day of the event is $15 to $35. > Read more.

‘Adventure Series’ to begin Friday

The County of Henrico Division of Recreation and Parks will present its annual Adventure Series in March, featuring slide presentations and speakers celebrating the outdoors. The first two presentations will include speakers discussing their own adventures, and the series will conclude with some short films on mountain culture.

The Adventure Series is free for all ages and takes place on March 2, 16 and 23. Locations vary and are listed below, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. > Read more.

Oklahoma tornado victims to benefit from Innsbrook concert

The Innsbrook Foundation will present a special concert June 19 at the Innsbrook Snagajob Pavilion to raise funds benefiting the victims of the Moore and Shawnee communities of Oklahoma.

The Innsbrook After Hours RVA Cares event will feature five bands and a family festival in recognition of the many families devastated by the Oklahoma tornadoes on May 20, which killed 23 people, injured 377 others, and left destroyed and damaged homes affecting 33,000 residents. > Read more.
