Support group offers teens help, hope through art

In a room labeled the garden room, a bright space with lavender-colored walls and pebble-gray chairs, art therapist Becky Jacobson might ask her patients to imagine a safe place, but she doesn’t ask them to describe it to her — she wants them to draw it.

The patients are free to draw whatever they envision, expressing themselves through their colored markers, a form of healing through art therapy.

“Some people might not feel safe anywhere because they have had hard things happening to them, and I have the background to help that person reground and feel safe in the group,” Jacobson said.

Eight’s enough? Crowded race for 56th District develops


Following the retirement of Delegate Peter Farrell [R-56th District], a number of candidates have thrown their hats into the ring to vie for the open seat in the Virginia General Assembly district, which contains a portion of Henrico’s Far West End.

Democratic challengers include Lizzie Basch and Melissa Dart, while Republican contenders include George Goodwin, Matt Pinsker, Graven Craig, Surya Dhakar, Jay Prendergrast and John McGuire. In addition to a section of Henrico, the district also includes portions of Goochland and Spotsylvania County, as well as all of Louisa County.

Twenty-five teams, composed of some 350 participants, gathered at Dorey Park in Varina April 8 for the Walk Like MADD 5k, to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving Virginia. The event raised more than $35,000, with more funds expected to come in through May 7.

Henrico’s bagged leaf collection to resume Jan. 17


Henrico County suspended its bagged leaf collection after last weekend’s snowfall. The free service will resume on the following revised schedule, beginning Tuesday, Jan. 17:

• Area D – Original schedule: Jan. 3-8; revised schedule: Jan. 17-22;

• Area E – Original schedule: Jan. 9-15; revised schedule: Jan. 23-29;

• Area A – Original schedule: Jan. 16-22; revised schedule: Jan. 30-Feb. 5

The 24th annual Saxon Shoes for the Needy collection to benefit The Salvation Army brought in 5,768 pairs of shoes. The shoes collected at Saxon in Richmond at Short Pump Town Center and in Fredericksburg at The Village at Spotsylvania Towne Centre were presented to The Salvation Army Adult Rehab Center in Richmond and The Salvation Army in Fredericksburg.

ECPI to host ‘Tech for Troops’ donation drive Jan. 14


ECPI University’s Richmond/Innsbrook campus is launching a new partnership with Tech for Troops to provide veterans with PCs, computer training and jobs, helping them learn new skills and rejoin the workforce.

The school will sponsor an event Saturday, Jan. 14 at ECPI University’s Career Discovery Day. Donations of used computers will be accepted at the Richmond/Innsbrook campus, 4305 Cox Road in Glen Allen, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Section of Virginia Road to close for a week

A portion of Virginia Road between Cole Boulevard and Lee Avenue will be closed to through traffic through approximately Thursday, Jan. 19 for the extension of sewer service to new home sites.

Residents of the affected area will be able to access their homes. Traffic will be detoured onto Richmond Avenue between Cole and Lee.

Fire closes New Bridge Learning Center

No one injured in blaze

JAN. 12, 10 A.M. – An overnight fire at the New Bridge Learning Center in Eastern Henrico forced Henrico County Public Schools officials to close the center today. No one was injured in the fire.

Shortly after 4 a.m., Henrico firefighters responded to reports of a fire at the facility, in the 5900 block of East Nine Mile Road. First-arriving police officers had reported smoke coming from the building.

Bourne to seek 71st District House seat


Richmond School Board member Jeff Bourne is the first candidate to formally announce his intention to seek the 71st District Virginia House of Delegates seat that will be vacated by Jennifer McClellan, who Tuesday won a special election for the Ninth District Virginia Senate seat. Bourne is a Democrat and a deputy attorney general for the state.

The 71st District primarily includes the City of Richmond but also includes several Henrico precincts. It is viewed as a Democratic stronghold.

McClellan wins, but GOP still controls Senate


Democrat Jennifer McClellan of Richmond easily won a seat in the Virginia Senate in a special election Tuesday, but Republicans retained control of the chamber by holding on to a district west of the capital city. As expected, McClellan won the 9th Senate District race, receiving 91 percent of the votes against her opponent, Libertarian Corey Fauconier.

McClellan, an attorney who currently serves in the Virginia House of Delegates, will be sworn in as a state senator on Wednesday as the General Assembly convenes for its 2017 session. During the session, balancing the state budget will be a priority, McClellan said Tuesday night.

West End fire kills 1, injures 3


An early morning house fire in Henrico's West End killed one person and injured three others.

Eighty-six year-old Mary Williams Booth died in the fire, which broke out in a home in the 2700 block of Darnell Road, near West Broad Street and Parham Road, shortly before 12:25 a.m. Jan. 11.

Henrico Fire officials responded to the residents about six minutes after a 911 call reported the fire.

Ninth District Senate election pits McClellan, Fauconier


Voters in Virginia's Ninth Senate District will elect a new state senator Jan. 10.

Voters in the district (which includes portions of Eastern and Northern Henrico, as well as part of Richmond and Hanover and all of Charles City County) will choose between Democrat Jennifer McClellan, a six-time member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and Libertarian Corey Fauconier of Highland Springs, who is running as an independent. McClellan is considered a heavy favorite for the seat, which was vacated by Donald McEachin after he won election to the U.S. Congress in November from Virginia's redrawn Fourth District.

Snowstorm causes urgent need for blood donors


The American Red Cross is urging eligible donors throughout the Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Region to give blood or platelets following the recent winter storm, which has compounded a severe winter blood shortage.

Snow and icy roads forced 27 blood drives to cancel in the Mid-Atlantic Blood Services Region, causing about 750 donations to go uncollected. Last month, nearly 100 blood drives were forced to cancel across the country due to severe weather, resulting in more than 3,100 blood donations going uncollected. Overall, hectic holiday schedules for many regular blood donors and weather contributed to about 37,000 fewer donations in November and December than what was needed.

Tractor trailer carrying 30,000 pounds of lettuce overturns on I-295


A tractor trailer carrying 30,000 pounds of lettuce overturned on I-295 in Varina Sunday morning, closing all three lanes of northbound traffic at exit 22 (Route 5).

At about 8:10 a.m., the 2003 Freightliner was traveling in the center lane and attempted to pass a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. As it was doing so, it began to fishtail and lost control, striking the Silverado, then running off the road on the right and striking the guard rail. The truck then veered back to the left side of the interstate, where it overturned.

No one injured in Northside house fire


No one was injured during a late night house fire Saturday in Henrico's Northside. The blaze in the 8300 block of Chamberlayne Road began while the occupants of the house were asleep, shortly before midnight Sunday.

An investigation concluded that the fire was accidental and began as the result of improper disposal of fireplace ashes. The two adults and two children in the home were awakened by smoke alarms and escaped without injuries.
