Glen Allen mother earns $7K ‘Parentpreneur’ grant


A Glen Allen mother and entrepreneur recently earned a $7,000 grant from The First Years, a juvenile products manufacturer, to help make her childhood clothing invention a reality.

Casey Bunn, who has two children (three-year-old Jillian and one-year-old Charlie) created Handsocks to solve a problem – the need for long, cozy, sock-like mittens that keep babies and older children warm while also providing protection from scratches and skin conditions. > Read more.

Henricopolis SWCD honors its stars at Assemblage


A century or so ago, Henrico County was known as the Dairy County of Virginia, and one of the largest dairy operations was centered at the Dorey family's barn in Varina.

On Jan. 7, the barn – now the site of the Dorey Park Recreation Center – was transformed into an art gallery, and its rafters hung with colorful student art work depicting nature scenes. > Read more.

SR-71 moving from Virginia Aviation Museum


One of the most visible exhibits at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston is on its way to a new home.

The world’s fastest and highest flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird, is preparing to move from the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia. The iconic, supersonic stealth plane will become the focal point of the SMVs new exhibition gallery, Speed, opening later this year.

Before traveling to its new home, the Blackbird will be disassembled and packaged by experts from Worldwide Aircraft Recovery and W.M. Jordan Company. > Read more.

Police arrest woman in connection with early-morning arson


SEPT. 1, 11:08 A.M. – Henrico Police have arrested and charged a 46-year-old Crozier woman in connection with an arson at a business on Three Chopt Road this morning.

At 2:59 a.m. this morning, Henrico Police and Fire received a call for service from a commercial alarm in The Balance and Ear Center building at 10200 Three Chopt Road. Arriving officers observed smoke coming from the building and fire on the interior. While checking the property, officers located a window through which entry was made into the building. > Read more.

Businesses collect, donate sports equipment


Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call collected nearly 1,000 pieces of sports equipment thanks to donations from the public, as well as from staff members and community partners, during the third annual AdvanceItUp! community initiative in June. AIU is designed to help combat childhood obesity in the metro Richmond community by increasing recreation options and active living at home and school for area kids who do not have access to usable sports equipment.

The physicians and staff from Advanced Orthopaedics and Ortho On-Call, along with volunteers from Fit4Kids, helped organize and clean the collected equipment before distribution. > Read more.

Henrico community rallies around local family after house fire


The beauty of tragedy is that it often brings with it the opportunity for an inspiring recovery. The Henrico community recently embodied that opportunity.

Tragedy struck a Henrico family when a fire scorched its home, leaving it with nothing. One of the family members is a teenage boy who was ready to embark on his college journey at James Madison University, but those plans seemingly went up in smoke with the fire.

Despite losing everything, that teenager has gone to James Madison, all thanks to a community effort to gather resources and raise money for the family. (Family members requested that their names not be used in this article.) > Read more.

Architect of World Trade Center Memorial to speak in Henrico


Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.

Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public > Read more.

Environmental Film Festival planned for February


The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.

A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.

A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
