Purify Infrared Sauna recently opened its second Henrico location at GreenGate Shopping Center in Short Pump.

Owner Mary Woodbridge opened her first Purify location on Patterson Avenue in July 2015. The new store is located at 301 Maltby Boulevard, Suite C, west of Short Pump Town Center.

Henrico Master Gardener training program accepting applications through Oct. 27


The Henrico County Office of Virginia Cooperative Extension is accepting applications for its next volunteer Master Gardener training program, which provides instruction in all aspects of horticulture.

Applications for the 2018 training program will be accepted through Friday, Oct. 27. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays from Jan. 16 through March 22.

Henrico Schools will host a job fair Oct. 30.

The event, to be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fairfield branch library, is designed to attract potential full-time and substitute registered nurses, instructional assistants, bus drivers and school nutrition workers.

Lidl to open 2 Henrico stores July 27

JULY 6, 3:10 P.M. – Lidl US will open four Richmond-area grocery stores – including two in Henrico County – July 27, company officials announced today. The Henrico stores, at 12151 West Broad Street in Short Pump and 5110 South Laburnum Avenue in Eastern Henrico – will open at 8 a.m. that day, following ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 7:40 a.m.

The new Richmond-area stores are among Lidl’s first locations in the country. The other two local stores opening that day are located at 11701 Iron Bridge Road in Chester and 1311 Mall Drive in North Chesterfield. (Another Henrico store is nearing completion at the intersection of Staples Mill Road and Hermitage Road.)

Police release sketch of Cheswick Park assault suspect


Henrico Police have released a sketch of the suspect who they say attacked a woman in Cheswick Park June 24.

The suspect is described as an African American male, 20 to 30 years old and approximately 5 foot 7 to 5 foot 9 in height, weighing 160 to 180 pounds. He was wearing a gray or bluish Captain America t-shirt, dark shorts, pink slippers and white socks. The sketch is pictured.

Henrico man dies in West End crash

A 48-year-old Henrico man died when the car he was driving crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of West Broad Street and John Rolfe Parkway early July 4.

Darrus T. Baker was driving westbound in an Infinity G35 at approximately 12:05 a.m. when his car struck a GMC Yukon sport utility vehicle that was attempting to turn left from southbound John Rolfe Parkway onto eastbound West Broad Street, according to Henrico Police.

The fifth edition of Henrico Restaurant Week, hosted in April at 10 participating restaurants, raised $2,000 for the Coal Pit Learning Center in Glen Allen. Henrico Restaurant Week is presented by Visit Henrico and hosted by the Henrico Citizen and its parent company, T3 Media, LLC.

CVWMA recycling rate climbs slightly to nearly 59 percent


Nearly 59 percent of waste generate in the metro Richmond region last year was recycled and kept out of local landfills, according to new data released by the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority.

The CVWMA's regional recycling rate for 2016 was 58.9 percent – one-tenth of one percent higher than in 2015 and its highest point in recent memory, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.

New Grand Mart grocery store coming to West End


The second New Grand Mart grocery store in the metro Richmond region will open in West Broad Commons in Henrico's West End. The store, which carries a number of ethnic and specialty items, as well as fresh produce, fish and meats, will locate in a 39,386-square-foot spot at the center, located at 9031 West Broad Street.

Price named director of Henrico’s Real Property Department


Henrico County Manager John A. Vithoulkas has appointed Andrew S. “Steve” Price to serve as director of the Real Property Department, effective July 8.

Price, who currently works as the department’s assistant director, will succeed Jon B. Tracy, who recently retired from the position.

Police urge safe driving during July 4th weekend

Halfway through 2017, there already have been 20 more traffic deaths in Virginia compared with the same time in 2016, and Virginia State Police are urging motorists to make safety a priority during the upcoming Fourth of July weekend.

This past weekend, June 23-25, 15 people died in traffic incidents in the state. Victims ranged in age from ages 4 months to 74 years, including drivers, passengers, motorcyclists and pedestrians, according to Virginia State Police.
