No one injured in Eastern Henrico shed fire


SEPT. 23, 10 A.M. – No one was injured during an early morning shed fire in Eastern Henrico today.

At approximately 3:55 a.m., Henrico County firefighters responded to the fire in the 4600 block of Sydclay Drive, near South Laburnum Avenue. A shed near the back of an apartment complex was on fire, and the heat from the fire had started to damage the back of the apartments. Firefighters were able to control the fire quickly, and there were no injuries as a result of the blaze. > Read more.

Celebration planned for 46-year Lakeside ES teacher


Lakeside Elementary School will host a celebration June 9 for Carole Timberlake, a first-grade teacher at the school for the past 46 years, who is retiring this year.

Henrico bond referendum likely to exceed $400 million

MAY 18, 5:12 P.M. – Henrico voters could cast their ballots this November on a proposed bond referendum that totals more than $400 million, the Citizen has learned.

In addition to the $272.6 million in school projects previously proposed by County Manager John Vithoulkas for the referendum, Vithoulkas will propose adding at least 12 more projects totaling at least $128 million.

Among the other projects are:

• seven Recreation and Parks projects (including funding for the construction of Greenwood Park in Glen Allen and Taylor Park in Sandston);

Richmond man stopped trying to bring gun through Richmond Airport checkpoint


A Richmond man was cited on state weapons charges after he was stopped by Transportation Security Administration officers at the Richmond International Airport checkpoint in the late afternoon May 16 when TSA officers detected a handgun in one of the man’s carry-on bags.

TSA officers detected the firearm, a .380 caliber handgun, in the man’s carry-on bag as he entered the checkpoint. The gun was not loaded.

TSA officers immediately contacted the Richmond International Airport Police, which responded, confiscated the gun and cited the man. > Read more.

Free children’s clothing for those in need

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year.
