Country Style Donuts to open West End location

The “King of the Doughnuts” is expanding his territory. Zouhair Nasserddine, owner of Country Style Donuts in Eastern Henrico, has announced the opening of a new store in the Gold’s Gym Plaza at West Tower, 8900 W. Broad Street.

Nasserddine, a native of Lebanon, earned the regal nickname while working for Dunkin’ Donuts in the 1970s.

“The owner saw him making doughnuts one day and called him the King of the Doughnuts,” said Nasserddine’s wife, Waswa. She says that the owner declared, “We can’t ever let this guy go!’” > Read more.

RIR tickets go on sale Jan. 15

Tickets for Richmond International Raceway’s April 25-26 NASCAR weekend go on sale Jan. 15 to the general public. A limited number of frontstretch seats will be available.

The weekend begins Friday, April 25, with the Blue Ox 100 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Race, followed by the ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race. Tickets start at $30 in advance, and children 12 and younger will be admitted free in general admission. > Read more.

Lovern & Friends donates $18k to LINC

LINC (Legal Information Network for Cancer recently received a donation of $18,655 from the Lovern & Friends charity organization. The money was raised at the Lovern & Friends golf tournament in October. LINC Executive Director Denise Kranich received the check from golf chairs Mike Lovern, Kent Scearce and Justin Steil last month.

Lovern & Friends began as an informal day of golf among friends to honor Michael Lovern, before he underwent his second operation to remove a tumor from his spinal cord. > Read more.

KBS employees donate food, earn vacation time

Employees of Henrico-based construction firm KBS donated cans of food and non-perishable items for the Central Virginia Food Bank and the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shore last month.

For each 12 cans a KBS employee donated, he or she qualified for an extra hour of vacation time during the holidays. > Read more.

Henrico to accept Christmas trees for recycling Dec. 26 to Jan. 12

The Keep Henrico Beautiful Committee and Henrico County Department of Public Utilities will accept Christmas trees for recycling into mulch from Thursday, Dec. 26 through Sunday, Jan. 12.

The free service, which preserves landfill space and the environment, is available to Henrico residents only. > Read more.

Agencies combine on new entry point to Chickahominy


Canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts soon will have a new access point to the Chickahominy River. VDOT, the James River Association and Henrico County Parks and Recreation are teaming up to establish a new site in Eastern Henrico.

The James River Association negotiated the deal with VDOT to procure official access to the area located just east of I-295 on North Airport Road in Sandston. The site includes a park-and-ride commuter lot bordering the Chickahominy River and has been an unofficial launch site used by paddlers for years. > Read more.

Equestrian clinic planned July 7-8 in Henrico

Henrico equestrians interested in deepening the bond between themselves and their horses have the opportunity to attend a two day clinic, held at Steppin’ High Stables on July 7-8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The clinic, “Become Partners with your Horse,” will be taught by multiple world champion equestrienne Terry Preiser and will focus on how riders and horses can work together to achieve more. > Read more.

Henrico school bus driver honored

The Henrico-based Hephaestus Society recently awarded its first annual community heroes award (the Hephaestus Award) to Hicham Elgharouch (pictured, center) for what it termed his "selfless acts of caring" in his duties as a Henrico County Public Schools bus driver. Henrico County Director of Pupil Transportation Josh Davis, joined Hephaestus Society President Travis Gardner, in presenting the award and an accompanying $1,500 check to Elgharouch last month.

Elgharouch was selected for his clear and demonstrated patience and for his infectious positive attitude, according to the society. > Read more.
