A Glen Allen mother and entrepreneur recently earned a $7,000 grant from The First Years, a juvenile products manufacturer, to help make her childhood clothing invention a reality.
Casey Bunn, who has two children (three-year-old Jillian and one-year-old Charlie) created Handsocks to solve a problem – the need for long, cozy, sock-like mittens that keep babies and older children warm while also providing protection from scratches and skin conditions. > Read more.

A century or so ago, Henrico County was known as the Dairy County of Virginia, and one of the largest dairy operations was centered at the Dorey family's barn in Varina.
On Jan. 7, the barn – now the site of the Dorey Park Recreation Center – was transformed into an art gallery, and its rafters hung with colorful student art work depicting nature scenes. > Read more.
One of the most visible exhibits at the Virginia Aviation Museum in Sandston is on its way to a new home.
The world’s fastest and highest flying production aircraft, the SR-71 Blackbird, is preparing to move from the museum to the Science Museum of Virginia. The iconic, supersonic stealth plane will become the focal point of the SMVs new exhibition gallery, Speed, opening later this year.
Before traveling to its new home, the Blackbird will be disassembled and packaged by experts from Worldwide Aircraft Recovery and W.M. Jordan Company. > Read more.

During the General Assembly’s 2013 session, state legislators debated how much to spend on public education. But has education funding been going up or down? It depends on whom you ask. Democratic politicians and the Virginia Education Association say funding for the commonwealth’s public schools is at its lowest level since 2008.

The Henrico Too Smart 2 Start Coalition’s youth ambassadors and Safe Harbor will present a forum Saturday, April 20 to educate youth and parents on healthy relationships and how to identify and prevent teen dating abuse.

On Feb. 10, the second annual Elby Awards drew 400 food experts, food lovers, and food industry professionals to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to pay tribute to the local culinary elite – and to Henrico resident and internationally renowned chef Paul Elbling, for whom the event is named.
Among the youngest honorees was another long-time Henrico resident who is just beginning her career in the food industry, but for whom teachers and Elby judges foresee a future ripe with promise. > Read more.

Michael Arad, the architect of the World Trade Center Memorial, will be the keynote speaker for The 2016 Adolf-Adams JCC Forum on Sat., Jan. 30, 2016 at 7:30 p.m., at the Carole and Marcus Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Henrico.
Arad’s “Reflecting Absence” architectural design was selected from more than 5,000 competitive entries as the template for the Memorial’s construction in New York City. During the forum, Arad will discuss the significance and symbolism of the design, as well as his inspiration. The event, which is a highlight of the Weinstein JCC’s Patron of the Arts series, is open to the public > Read more.

The Sixth Annual RVA Environmental Film Festival (RVA EFF) will be held Feb. 1-7, 2016 at various locations, including in Henrico County.
A partnership of The Enrichmond Foundation, Capital Region Land Conservancy, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and Falls of the James Group - Sierra Club, the festival will feature a number of insightful films designed to raise awareness of environmental issues relative to all residents of the planet and Richmond citizens in particular.
A detailed schedule will be released at a time closer to the festival, but the popular children's portion has been set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at the Byrd Theatre in Carytown. > Read more.
