Henrico Police seek tips about Sandston murder

Henrico Police are seeking information from the public about a murder that occurred Dec. 2 in Sandston.

At about 2:30 a.m., police responded to the 5200 block of Lewis Road (just behind the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad near Richmond International Airport) after reports of a shooting. Officers located 21-year-old Jarrelle James Pringle, of Richmond, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives continue to investigate the incident. > Read more.

Virginia529 prepaid tuition enrollment program opens


The enrollment period for the Virginia529 prePAID college tuition program is now open through March 31.

For 2016-2017, tuition and mandatory fees at a Virginia public university can cost as much as $21,234. The Virginia529 plan is designed to help families eliminate the uncertainty of future increases at those institutions. > Read more.

Richmond SCORE announces 2017 entrepreneurship competition


Richmond SCORE, in partnership with the Virginia Biotechnology Research Park, will launch its second Business Model Canvas Competition Jan. 1.

The nonprofit volunteer mentoring organization is inviting all Richmond-area entrepreneurs and start-ups (new businesses up to one year old and that haven't won money or tangibles in a business competition in the same time frame) to apply as contestants. Henrico programs honored by Virginia Association of Counties

Henrico County recently was recognized by the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) for programs that help nonnative-English-speaking residents assimilate to the community, informed residents about a meals tax proposal and promoted a better understanding of the workplace culture within the county’s government.

Henrico was one of 12 counties to receive a 2014 Achievement Award from VACo in recognition of a model local government program. Henrico and Loudoun County each received three awards, the most of any county. Overall, VACo recognized 18 programs among 61 entries. > Read more.

Heller Award presented at Beth Sholom

The 2014 Arthur Heller Employee Recognition Award was presented in June to Shenita "Deka" Thompson, an employee of the Healthcare Center at Beth Sholom Lifecare Community.

Thompson, who has been employed in the Healthcare Center since 2006, was praised for her compassion and giving nature. Currently the medical records clerk, she has also worked as a CNA and a unit clerk, coordinated transportation for residents of the Healthcare Center, managed medical supplies when others employees vacation coordinates and filled in as receptionist when needed. She is known as the person who is the first to collect money to assist a fellow employee, and as an organizer of farewell parties. > Read more.

Elephant Auto Insurance moving headquarters to Allianz building

UPDATE: AUG. 18, 1:42 P.M. – Elephant Insurance is moving its U.S. headquarters from one Henrico location to another.

The company announced that it will relocate to a 54,000-square-foot space in the Allianz Global Assistance building at 9950 Mayland Drive. The building is the former home of Circuit City.

Elephant Auto has been located in Henrico for five years. The move will nearly double its existing space in size and will allow the company to nearly double its workforce in the next several years, to more than 600 employees.

RIR’s Christmas tree lighting rescheduled for Dec. 12


Richmond International Raceway's 13th annual Community Christmas tree lighting has been rescheduled from Dec. 6 to Monday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m., due to inclement weather expected on the original date.

Entertainment Dec. 12 will be provided by the Laburnum Elementary School choir and the Henrico High School Mighty Marching Warriors band. Tree decorations crafted by students from Laburnum Elementary School and L. Douglas Wilder Middle School will be on display. Hot chocolate and cookies will be supplied by the Henrico High School football boosters. > Read more.

The project:HOMES "Renew Crew" (above) recently assisted an elderly member of the Laurel Presbyterian Church in Henrico by clearing brush, trimming hedges and raking leaves in her yard.

The Renew Crew serves low-income, disabled and elderly homeowners in need of small-scale home repairs such as porch, railing and step repairs, exterior painting, clearing overgrown yards, tearing down outbuildings, wheelchair ramps and other critical repairs and accessibility modifications. > Read more.
