Henrico PAL awards scholarship


Kyla Lord-Barrett, a senior at Highland Springs H.S. and the current vice president of the Henrico Police Athletic League's (PAL) Youth Leadership Council, was awarded the first-ever YLC Scholarship at the May 18 PAL board meeting.

Lord-Barrett started with Henrico PAL as a participant in the after-school program and summer camp more than six years ago and has come full circle, now serving in the after-school program and summer camp as a youth counselor. She will attend the New York Culinary Institute in the fall. > Read more.

Sandston Memorial Day Parade cancelled

UPDATE: MAY 30, 9:45 A.M. – The Eighth Annual American Legion Post 242 & Battlefield Post 144 Sandston Memorial Day Parade has been cancelled, because of anticipated bad weather, organizers announced this morning. The event will not be rescheduled.

Freeman students learn to ‘Drive Smart’


Students signed a banner pledging not to text and drive during a Drive Smart Virginia event at Freeman High School May 26. The event helped show students the dangers of driving while distracted or intoxicated.

Below, Freeman student Rachel Marcus attempts to navigate a path of cones while wearing goggles that simulate the impairment of a 0.15 blood alcohol content level. The goal was to show students how harmful drinking and driving can be. > Read more.

Virginia native Lee Smith, named 2014 ‘All Henrico Reads’ author

The Henrico County Public Library, in partnership with Henrico County Public Schools and the Friends of Henrico County Public Library, will host award-winning author Lee Smith on April 2, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Glen Allen High School, 10700 Staples Mill Road, Glen Allen, 23060, as part of its annual "All Henrico Reads" program.

Her novel, Guests on Earth, the featured title, will be available for sale, along with some of her other novels. She will autograph books following the program. > Read more.

‘All Pro Dad’ event scheduled Dec. 17

First Things First of Greater Richmond will host All Pro Dad, a free dinner and program for dads and their elementary-aged children on Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 6;30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Martin's Crossridge, 10250 Staples Mill Road, Glen Allen. The event will take place in the store's community room. Attendees will receive free pizza, drinks and an hour to bond while discussing important values. > Read more.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992. > Read more.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.
