SEPT. 23, 10 A.M. – No one was injured during an early morning shed fire in Eastern Henrico today.
At approximately 3:55 a.m., Henrico County firefighters responded to the fire in the 4600 block of Sydclay Drive, near South Laburnum Avenue. A shed near the back of an apartment complex was on fire, and the heat from the fire had started to damage the back of the apartments. Firefighters were able to control the fire quickly, and there were no injuries as a result of the blaze. > Read more.

Sculptor Paul DiPasquale and Donna Meade, the widow of the late musician Jimmy Dean, May 11 helped to unveil a newly commissioned bronze statue of Dean at the Richmond Marriott. The event preceded the Jimmy Dean Music Festival, which benefitted Henricus Historical Park in Chesterfield. DiPasquale created the sculpture for the Jimmy Dean Museum, to be opened at Wayland Baptist University in Dean’s hometown of Plainview, Tex. Dean and Meade lived together in Varina for 20 years until Dean’s death in June 2010. > Read more.

Capitol Granite will have its grand opening for its Glen Allen showroom, located at 9663 West Broad Street, on Memorial Day weekend. In addition to special prices for granite countertops, customers can also enter for a chance to win a free vanity up to 61 inches in size, and three winners will win a granite cutting board. New program making big impact in schools

Nidia Chajon knows what it’s like to arrive in the United States from a foreign country, uncertain about what lies ahead. When she came to the U.S. from Guatemala two decades ago, there was no one to advocate for her and help ease the transition to a new culture, new surroundings and a new language.
In short, she didn’t have a Nidia Chajon. Fortunately, the families of Holladay Elementary School do.
Today, Chajon is one of 21 family advocates working in Henrico County’s Title I elementary schools and preschool programs;. (Title I schools are those whose percentage of students on free or reduced lunch plans exceeds a certain threshold.) > Read more.

The Children's Clothing Closet at Highland Springs United Methodist Church will be open Saturday, Aug. 27 and Tuesday, Aug. 30 to provide free new or nearly new children's clothing for families in need, prior to the start of the school year.
