Sandston Memorial Day Parade to return for eighth year May 30


The Eighth Annual American Legion Post 242 & Battlefield Post 144 Sandston Memorial Day Parade will start May 30 at 1 p.m. at Seven Pines Elementary School on Beulah Road and proceed down Williamsburg Road through Sandston to Confederate Avenue. It will be preceded at noon by a veterans’ recognition ceremony at Seven Pines National Cemetery in Sandston.

Post-parade festivities will include live music, children’s activities, food and exhibitor booths. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Navy Veterans.” > Read more.

Freeman students learn to ‘Drive Smart’


Students signed a banner pledging not to text and drive during a Drive Smart Virginia event at Freeman High School May 26. The event helped show students the dangers of driving while distracted or intoxicated.

Below, Freeman student Rachel Marcus attempts to navigate a path of cones while wearing goggles that simulate the impairment of a 0.15 blood alcohol content level. The goal was to show students how harmful drinking and driving can be. > Read more.

HCPS district-wide spelling bee rescheduled for Jan. 29

Because of the threat of inclement weather, Henrico County Public Schools will postpone its district-wide spelling bee until Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. The contest will still be held at Hungary Creek Middle School. The event had been scheduled for tonight.

One winner from each of the 45 elementary schools and one winner from each of the 12 middle schools will compete, and HCPS-TV will be there to stream the event live. You can watch from your computer by going to the HCPS website at henrico.k12.va.us. > Read more.

In 2009, Aljanette Hall struggled like many Americans. She found herself out of a job after many years working in the real estate business. The time off afforded her the opportunity to live out her true passion - shaping young girls into successful women-to-be who know their value.

19th Annual Asian American Celebration planned May 21

The Asian American Society of Central Virginia will hold its 19th Annual Asian American Celebration on Saturday, May 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, 403 N. 3rd St. in Richmond, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Admission is free.

The theme for this year’s celebration will be “Our Heritage," in recognition of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage month, designated by the U.S. Congress in 1992. > Read more.

Sandston Founders Club honors Sydnor


The Founders Club of Sandston presented lifetime membership to Charles W. Sydnor at its 12th annual meeting last month.

Sydnor, who grew up in Sandston and later served as president of Emory and Henry College for eight years, was honored by Founder Club President Alice Taylor Baldwin at the April 23 event at Sandston Memorial Recreation Center. > Read more.
