Brazilian native becomes U.S. citizen on Fourth of July

On Independence Day, a Brazilian-born Henrico resident took the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance on the steps of the Virginia Historical Society and felt peace finally settle around her.

Preschoolers give pillows to families in need


A group of preschoolers from Chesterbrook Academy Preschool donated 56 pillows to local families in need at the Housing Families First shelter. The shelter is always in need of pillows and linens as, since families take the donated ones with them to their new homes.

Housing Families First provides shelter and support for homeless families and assist them in finding a permanent housing solution. The shelter serves people year-round, said Terri Iguina, operations and volunteer manager at Housing Families First.

Unattended oily rags cause fire in commercial building near Richmond Raceway


Unattended oily rags that spontaneously combusted caused an early morning two-alarm fire Tuesday in a commercial building in the 3800 block of Carolina Avenue, across from Richmond Raceway.

Henrico firefighters were called at about 5:10 to respond to reports of smoke coming from the building. Once they arrived five minutes later, they found thick smoke pushing from the rood on two sides of a warehouse whose tenant specializes in woodworking and hardwood floors.

The crime occurred in the Carver neighborhood at the intersection of West Broad and Goshen Streets, around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 7. Officers were told the victim was on his motorcycle and traveling westbound on West Broad Street.

An appreciative crowd of parents, grandparents, siblings and other members of the Henrico Police Athletic League (PAL) "family" turned out July 13 to celebrate an award-winning year for the PAL Dance Team and see the group's end-of-year performance. Held at the Eastern Henrico Recreation Center, the event featured several dance numbers (interspersed with occasional audience participation from younger siblings) as well as the presentation of individual awards.

Publix opens first Metro Richmond store in Glen Allen

Another much-anticipated entrant into the crowded local grocery store scene arrived July 15, when Florida-based Publix opened its first Virginia store at the new Nuckols Place shopping center.

The store, located at Nuckols Road and Twin Hickory Drive in Glen Allen, will employ about 140 workers. It is the first of eight Publix locations planned in Henrico County.

Hair Cuttery will be donating back-to-school haircuts to children who need it most this summer through its Share-A-Haircut program. From Aug. 1-15, for every child up to age 18 who purchases a haircut at one of Hair Cuttery’s nearly 900 salons, the chain will donate one free haircut certificate to a disadvantaged child in the community. More than 61,000 free haircuts were donated last year.

Bon Secours establishes new midwifery practice at St. Mary’s Hospital


Bon Secours Richmond OB-GYN, an obstetrics and gynecology provider of Bon Secours Richmond Health System, recently established a midwifery practice at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital. Three nurse-midwives will provide 24/7 midwifery care to women and their families. It is the first midwifery practice of its kind in the West End.

Certified nurse-midwives are registered nurses with master’s degrees, post-master’s training and board certification by the American College of Nurse-Midwives. They will work with physicians at Richmond OB-GYN, including Alice Hirata, M.D. and Sarah Peterson, M.D., in a collaborative manner.
